Sheridan Douglas - Ace of Coins
Against a background of deep purple is an intricately carved coin or mandala in white and yellow. Like all of the other Aces, I think that this card is deceptively simple. The purple colour of the background makes me think of richness and also of the spiritual aspect of the coins suit - I think purple is a very spiritual colour and it's also associated with richness as it was once a colour only worn by royalty. The coin or mandala has a pattern which is very symetrical and which consists of 4 cresent moons and 4 oval or egg shapes. Since 4 is the number of all things solid and earthy I think this is very appropriate. I'm sure more things will come to me... __________________ 'Be excellent to each other' - Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. 'the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.. When I look at the Ace of Coins there is something very harvest about it..and it's not the colors, they remind me of royalty and maybe the provisions for a kingdom for winter. But the symbols on the Coin speak.... oak tree, acorn, half moon, harvest, bird wings flying south, cocoons, north, south, east. and west, and all the things that happen in those directions to the light in the fall. It also reminds me of the grate on the front of my grandfather wood burning stove when the fire was lite because it was getting nippy outside. __________________ But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face. I hadn't seen an oak tree or an acorn but now I do. I've never thought of the Ace of Coins as a harvest before but it fits really well. It looks all warm and cozy doesn't it, even thought essentially it's just a coin against a purple background. I love what you've said about your grandfather's wood burning stove too...this ace does look like the door or the grate on one of those.

Thank you Sulis...funny what we can get from a simple symbol...the simpler the better for me. The stove grate was my first flash and then I set the card up for the day and kept looking at it and the rest came in from there. I don't know what coins traditionally are supposed to be, but for me they alway represent Fall. These days I tend to gravitate towards simple designs, uncluttered and brightly colored decks. So this one perfectly fits my needs. __________________ But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face. W. B. Yeats *Hermits Unite |

I'm just looking at my Sheridan-Douglas Ace of Coins and now you mention it I can see crescent-moons and acorns, but I can also see the round emblem as a shield. Which suggests ideas of protection, security, authority even, which would fit in with the imperial purple background. It's also interesting that this seems to be the only "coin" depicted that isn't actually a pentacle. |
