The Thoth Book by Crowley

rainwolf

Crowley's Book of Thoth may be hard to read if you don't have a little background, so I second Duquette's book because that is what made me more interested in his deck.

Some knowledge of astrology and kabbalah will also help understanding his deck. Just look for concepts--no need to start memorizing everything.

Book of Thoth,

Yeah, read it.

Probably the best book for the deck.

Did Waite really do a black magick book, or was that a joke????

"The Book of Ceremonial Magic" was originaly published as "The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts". Supposedly Waite changed some of the spells and incantations so that they wouldn't work.

If I remember right this book also contained some material from Eliphas Levi and supposedly was a very young Edward Alexander's (even before university I think) first exposure to magic.

Oh Lillie, ya gotta read it! Much more fun than crucifying a toad:laugh:

Lillie

I wouldn't do that to a toad......
Not these days.

These days I'm a nice person.
Especially to toads.

I'll look out for that book though.
Sounds fun.

So, there are 2 versions?
The good one, and the one that got changed?
Is it possible to get the god one?
Or only if you pay thousands of pounds for a 'first edition' type thing?

I've never read much of Waites stuff.
I have him down in my mind as a really dull writer.
Is this one any better?

Yes - "Le livre de Thoth" was published by Urania in 1999 (260 pages), and you can order it from amazon.fr (and I'm sure other places).

I don't have it, so I can't comment on the translation.

I've only looked at this book in the bookstore so maybe someone who has actually read it through will also have something to say about it.

It looked to me like a compendium of tid-bits mostely from medieval grimoires. There is also a bit at the beginning about ceremonial magick.

I don't know if the story about Waite changing some of the spells and operations in order to prevent people from using evil black magic is true, but I've never heard that there was a version that was unchanged.

I think though that most of the old grimoires are available in print now and some of them even free on line.
