MAAT Tarot Study Group-Queen of Cups

Tomorrow is the Full Moon in Scorpio

Week of the full moon in Scorpio

“The full moon phase symbolizes generosity and the need to give to others. This phase implies an intuitive objective understanding of self and others.”

Queen of Cups

Planetary ruler Venus

The image for the Queen of Cups is a woman holding apple blossoms. To her right side there is an ancient jar containing honey. This honey will be fermented and changed i n t o mead. This mead will be used in the ceremonies and celebrations surrounding the Summer Solstice. Behind her hangs a golden curtain with embroidered images of the ancient Bee goddess. This curtain represents Life's mystery and the connection of all mothers to the first ancient mothers.

This woman represents the flowering earth and she also is a flower of womanhood, attractive to her man, who together with her forms the sacred alliance known as the King and Queen of May. This is simply the sacred sexual union of male and female, which creates life on earth. She represents a time in a woman's life when she is at the peak of her fertility. She may in fact already be pregnant, this fact may be yet unknown even to her. She is innocent to the reality of what motherhood entails. She is idealistic and has no idea of the grueling job she has been given. She is full of love for her unborn child and her mate. She is prepared for a perfect future, which includes everything she has ever dreamed of.

The metaphor of the Queen of Cups can be applied to any aspect of life where creativity is involved. She is the beginning of the project the "excitement" before the reality of how much work is really required to manifest the 'Dream' into reality. Her sting is part of the bargain whether that sting is represented by the bee or the scorpian. At first all you see is the beautiful side of a situation it is what attracts you to do the work. This is how the universe intises us to get the job done.

Traditional tarot meaning: a woman with brown hair, and the zodiac sign Cancer.

In a Reading: This card represents the newly pregnant mother. She is idealistic and dreamy about her new baby and hasn’t got a clue what she has gotten herself into. She can be a bit of an emotional drama queen due to hormonal changes. This is can be the warm and fuzzy period of pregnancy.

In continuance of the story of lost lost/learned/gained, the next set of cards to tell the story are the 5 of cups, 6 of cups and queen of cups. All are posted here, and links to this post will be placed other the under two. We have now turned from triumphant choice and have to deal with the consequences of our stand. And now, we turn to love lost....

Cards/Numbers: 5 of Cups/46, 6 of Cups/47, Queen of Cups/48

Card Images: see attached

First Impressions: The girl in the five of cups reminds me a bit of the three of swords in her sorrow. The sorrow that comes from a loss of faith in what used to be a comfort, but it is on a more personal scale. The six of cups comes in, a bittersweet nostalgic memory of those beautiful things that are now gone, or irrevocably changed. But, along comes the queen- who reminds us that in order to build new memories, we must let go of the old; in order to build new ties and family, we must be able to wash away the stagnant. She is a regal, but loving queen- such a gorgeous card. The bees- they remind me of Brighid- a true queen of home and hearth.

Senses: You can taste the salt of your own tears, as they roll silently down your face. There are no sobs, no sound- other than the faint buzzing of bees far off in the distance. You are past that now, sitting in a deep regret. You smell the blossoms on the tree- over-ripe and falling. The bittersweet tang of nostalgia mixed with the flowers fills your nose.

Symbols: cups, blackbirds, puppets, children, death, bees, queen

Story (intuitive): The pain, it really cuts deep, such a sorrow at the things that are lost. The new path- it was going to be rocky and hard- but who would have ever guessed how much sacrifice would be required? I suppose it is better, the not knowing, lest you move on without picking it. But, a little-girl voice still cries softly, "Why?!". And so it unfolds- the end of an era. And you sit back in pain as those you loved and called family turn away from you. Harsh words and deeds that kill all bonds are thrown carelessly and callously to you. And you sit, with a deep sorrow- knowing that there is no way that things will ever be the same, no matter how long time flows, or how deep their apology. For at the time of your greatest crisis and triumph to save your soul, they hate you for choosing a path that eluded them, and still does. And you are daughter/sister no more. As the tears streak down your face, you walk past a scene reflecting happier times. And somehow, though bittersweet, it heals those deep cuts. Yes, you will take the good memories- they will not be forgotten. But- that time is over, and the though nostalgic, it is time to move on. And so you continue on, and find yourself at a lake- and as you wash the dried tears from your face, you see the countenance of the Queen, staring back at you softly. And you realize that you have changed, and have become like the queen- you now see an ally and friend. For now- you no longer need those old ties or titles, you are strong enough to stand on your own. And the time has come for you to form a new family- one with ties of love and acceptance, in which you are now woman, lover and mother- the Queen of Cups. And now, with a clean slate, you are ready to go forth- and build.

Astrologic: 5 of Cups: week of the new moon in Taurus, 6 of Cups: week of the first quarter moon in Leo, Queen of Cups: week of the full moon in Scorpio. Planetary ruler: Venus.

Element: water

Keywords:
5 of Cups: negative view, loss
6 of Cups: nostalgia
Queen of Cups: sacred womanhood/motherhood

Meanings:
5 of Cups: dwelling on the negative, allowing loss to cloud your vision
6 of Cups: childhood memories, things from the past
Queen of Cups: traditionally a brown haired woman with the zodiac sign of Cancer, idealistic wife/mother

Quote: "Through loss I have learned love."

She makes me think of some character in medieval stories (for example Yseult) but on their state at the beginning of the stories. This Queen of Cups have a look of naïveté to me. She look hopeful but have a little hint of sadness. The way she is staying upright and the background give me the impression she is posing for a painting.
