There are variations in a number of early decks as to which side characters face, and there is also a story about I cannot recall who that made some imprints from carvings he found on some northern Cathedrals in order to have a stencilled version: he simply added some wet-chalky substance and pressed against the building some also semi-moist thin cardboard. The orientation of the figures could also be accounted for as someone copies an existing pattern - only needing to carefully re-arrange the word so as to be read correctly. Anyone starting with lino-cuts would, I suggest, probably also do something similar. |
