These new faces are a very interesting bunch, let me tell you...from keys to monkeys to rows of locks on a single door weighing more the the doors they are securing. __________________ Full cup, steady hand. Perhaps on this train there will be all kinds of new sights and sounds, delights for the senses that transcend all earthly bounds? http://www.crystalinks.com/michaelangelo.jpg __________________ “Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm.” The Gaia Shop Get Your Goddess On! "Such a dedicated crew", thinks the Engineer(me) as I signals the bar keep for a chaser. "Where is that hot air on my nape coming from" I wonders as I gulp a fine Imperial stout and turn my head in time to see a flash of orange fur and curled tail. I laugh in delight as the creature flees from my sudden movement. "come back and share a pint" I jokingly yell to its backside as it disappears around a corner..... I turn back to my beer and thoughts of my crew. __________________ Full cup, steady hand. Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. Ah! 12.40. Time for a cozy fire and I think I will cuddle up on a bear rug. http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/6533/dsc0014uq9.jpg and I better call my personal guard in, things went a bit array at the docks tonight. http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/2894/dsc0042rb5.jpg __________________ Full cup, steady hand. Something else that everyone might find useful as they ready themselves for the journey ahead... ![]() RONALD KNOX'S DECALOGUE Here is Ronald Knox's famous Ten Commandment list for Detective Novelists from the preface to Best Detective Stories of 1928-29 which Knox edited. A few of them are out of date or frivolous, but they were intended to encourage “fair play” in the creation of a puzzle. Naturally these have become a kind of catechism and an infuriating challenge to generations of writers. • The criminal must be someone mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to follow. • All supernatural or preternatural agencies are ruled out as a matter of course. • Not more than one secret room or passage is allowable. • No hitherto undiscovered poisons may be used, nor any appliance which will need a long scientific explanation at the end. • No 'criminal foreigners' as major characters unless their cultural background has some relevance to the plot beyond exotic obfuscation. • No accident must ever help the detective, nor must he ever have an unaccountable intuition which proves to be right. • The detective must not himself commit the crime. • The detective must not light on any clues which are not instantly produced for the inspection of the reader. • The stupid friend of the detective, the Watson, must not conceal any thoughts which pass through his mind; his intelligence must be slightly, but very slightly, below that of the average reader. • Twin brothers, and doubles generally, must not appear unless we have been duly prepared for them. What's that thing they say about rules? Rules were made... Rules don't fade...
