Hello Shaweling and all of you in this coming 2008 year,

Just a quick rectification:
In fact The Jodo/Camoin deck was imaginated in Paris and printed in West of Europe (low cost for printing).
Alessandro Jodorowsky lives in Paris and Philippe Tourrasse AKA Philippe Camoin lives in Barcelonna Spain.
Only his familly is living in Marseille France.
So unfortunatly their common deck is not a "Made in Marseille" 's deck.

Sorry for this non romantic new, But Truth is truth... and facts are facts.

On the other hand Jean Noblet deck was imaginated in France (Jean Claude Flornoy home in Mayenne region) and also printed in West of Europe.

Only his original hand made stenciled version (22 Majors I recommands to you) was made in France "from the top to the bottom.

Printing Tarot decks is a commercial activity and Globalisation and Capitalism forces Tarot' makers to search for lower cost production's zone.

Bonne Année 2008 anyway

There's a wealth of difference, from my perspective, between the Camoin-Jodorowski and the Noblet.

As I wrote a review (that is on AT) a number of years ago on the Camoin, it should be noted that at that stage there was bugger all readily available (outside France - except for only two other alternatives the Grimaud and the Fournier Marseille decks). The ensuing year, having obtained (with some difficulties) the Hadar, I again wrote a brief review... but still at that stage it was still relatively difficult to get hands on Marseille decks in English speaking countries.

This has well and truly changed.

The Conver has become readily available with not only its multiple publication, but its more effective distribution - in large part thanks to LoScarabeo.

With the Noblet, we have here something of a new venture: Flornoy first made those hand-made trumps only, and it is only after various considerations (and 'encouragement') that he finally not only decided to complete the whole deck, but also saw that unless it was printed not by hand, but by modern means, its production would not exceed what few of us would pound upon.

Here we have a meticulous rendition from someone who has carefully sought to render the deck to its original splendor. But more importantly, not only Flornoyr, but also Noblet himself appears to have taken care in its design. It does not, to be sure, have the fine detailed finish of the few cards dating from a little earlier still that were found in a well at a Sforza Castle, but it comes closest to the source of not only the 'Marseille' style (which has nothing to do with the city of Marseille in any case), but also to tarot in general.

The design, the vibrancy of the colouration, the deck size (relatively small compared to others), and the overall design makes this, from my perspective, a deck that cannot be avoided if one is to make tarot one's study and seek to understand its impulse living.

Robert, that is a fantastic article on the Noblet. Very informative, and you hardly show any bias.

Well, to be fair, I also highly recommend the Vieville!

Now, have I told you about the amazingly beautiful Tarot de la Félicité by Pierrick Pinot?

And of course, there's the hand-stenciled 22 Trumps of the Noblet and the Dodal available from Flornoy.

Oh! and there's the...

Did you have to tell me about the Felicite? Only 320 copies? Ouch, it is beautiful. Love that angry face on the Sun. And that Wheel of Fortune is inhabited by some odd creatures.

(thank goodness I already have the Vieville and the Noblet 22 card)
