Off topic, but couldn't this be the source of the RWS 6 of Wands?

I imagine the scenario went something like this:

Knight: "Your Martini, Sire?"

Lorenzo: "Shaken, not stirred?"

Knight: "Certainly Sire!"

Thanks. The more materials the better. I believe there's even more pictures in Venice that we can refer to. It is a treasure-trove everywhere you look!!! I'll have to get some of my Venice pictures onto my computer.

Of course! (le pendu believes the knights should wear spurs)

I don't know how common it is (probably common), but I also noticed that the headgear on the Knight of Baton's horse is "triangular", coming to a point on the forehead, like one of the horses in the image:

PS: Hell.. even the garment on the Valet in the painting looks a lot like the garment on the Knight..doesn't it?

In summary, I read a book by Germain Bazin (who was then a curator - or at least somebody important - of the Louvre I think) which had a kind of sourcing about Oriental headgear. A chapter on possible sources of the turbans in these extraordinary sculptures which have traces of both European art and also Oriental. Or maybe Byzantine? A bit like the Vieville really. I think that´s his name; I´ll have to check it. It was a fascinating essay. Basically, it was a way of conveying exoticism, and goes back to the 3 Magi tradition.
BINGO.

Thanks so very much for your contribution to this thread!!! I'm sure there is much more to explore, but look at the riches revealed so far!

Mary, it would be wonderful if you could add some more images to the conversion.

Isn't it lovely to hear of Venice and Florence in these discussions? I've heard they have both contributed (at least a little bit) to the "world of art" in their time...

While were on the topic of spurs, a few bits of 'equestrian trivia' that may or may not be of interest. Not only the spur, but the modern 'cowboy' boot itself is a direct desendent of the medieval riding boot, which was of course introduced in the 'New World' by the Spanish Conquistadores.

Sig. Gozzoli obviously didn't ride horses, or take the time to observe those who did. The feet should be held with heel down, toe up, to prevent the foot from slipping into the stirrup if the horse bolts. A thrown rider with a foot caught in a stirrup would be trampled to death. Also the boots would have had a taller heel to further prevent the foot going into the stirrup.

More fun facts to know and share...
