All the Aces in this deck are portrayed as grimoires, all closed except the Ace of Swords. The Ace of Chalices is portrayed with the traditional element associated with this suit - water. Small, floating orbs appear beneath the grimoire and it's actual reflection in the water appears to have a shining light in the centre.
I've come to see this deck as lessons in courage and of confronting the darker, more unpleasant aspects of life. The cards appear grim and challenging, and yet the characters they show are often courageous and battling against their real and imagined demons. It suggests that we shouldn't give in to our fears.
The Ace of Chalices, with a book displaying an eye, suggests to me that this card and suit is for confronting the deep-seated fears within ourselves. When we open this book, we are entering the realm of our souls and our deepest emotions.
