Early "French/Swiss" Decks that predate Conver

le pendu

I'd like to know which early "French/Swiss" Decks we have samples of, and if possible, the date and location of when/where they were made.

I'm reluctant to use the phrase TdM, because I am not interested in limiting this list to the pattern which seems to be more and more limited in many discussions to Nicolas Conver's style. In fact, I'm particularly interested in the decks that existed before the Conver deck.

What "French/Swiss" decks do we have samples of that predate Conver?

So far, I think the list might look like this:

Geofroy Catelin, Lyon, 1557
"Tarot of Paris", Paris, c1600-1650
Jacques Vieville, Paris, c.1650
Jean Noblet, Paris, c1650
Jean Dodal, Lyon, c1701-1715
Jean-Pierre Payen, Avignon, 1713
François Heri, Soleure, c.1718
Jean-Baptiste Madenié, Dijon, 1739 (possibly 1709??)
Claude Burdel, (anyone know??), 1751

Where does the François Chasson deck fit into this list?

Does anyone have information on the deck by Claude Tomasset?

I've seen a reference to a deck by Grimaud listed as 1748, anyone have info?

Thanks very much for any information on this! Please let me know what I am missing in this list.

best,
robert

I realise that the Chosson has been argued to include an error in the woodcarved date reading '1672', and that Depaulis suggests that this should really be 1762, but I personally have my doubts.

I would personally place the Chosson as dated within the deck.

...and is not the Tommasset from around 1731?

I'll have to check and get back...

There was a Pierre Madenié 1709 and a Jean-Baptiste Madenié, Dijon, 1739. The latter also had a subsidiary in Berne, Switzerland. Claude Burdel (also born in Dijon) used the same woodcuts in 1751 (Fribourg, Switzerland).

Thanks for the information so far.

Questions:

Do we have online samples of the Chosson anywhere I could look at?

Am I right in saying therefore that we have:
Pierre Madenié, (Dijon???), 1709
Jean-Baptiste Madenié, Dijon, 1739

Are there any samples of the Pierre Madenié 1709 deck? Is the Jean-Baptiste Madenié deck a copy of the 1709?

thanks,
robert
