Before I begin a reading with a sitter I've never read before, I make sure the cards are connecting with them. So, first, I would begin by asking the cards (universe, spirit, guidance, etc) to show me what is on the persons mind.
I'd pull 4 cards for past on top and four cards below for present. I would then tell the client what I saw and would have them validate/confirm my insights. Usually, the cards are spot on. But my favorite part would be when the client gives more detailed insights into their situation and I could then see exactly how the cards "talk."

It was her imagination, wondering if someone is cheating on her. Doesn’t mean it’s true, just means this is what she is projecting.

confusing the connection (the cards were telling me the question was not the correct question).
