The New Aeon and the 6 of Cups

Aoife

Crowley says_ [quoted by Duquette, in relation to The Hanged Man]...

Under a Fiery lord of the Aeon, the watery element, so far as water is below the Abyss, is definitely hostile, unless the opposition is the right opposition implied in marriage

What is meant by the phrase I've underlined?

Given that the 6 of Cups is below the abyss, how come it is a generally positive card? Is it solely the placement in Tiphareth, and the Sun in Scorpio - or does it relate to the underlined phrase?

Many thanks

The marriage that Crowley is talking about is the union of complementary opposites. In one sense Fire and Water are hostile towards each other because of their contrary natures, but in the sense implied in the 6 of Cups you have the direct opposite. This card, like all the sixes, is the joining of two opposing principles in a harmonious union. Somewhat like Yin and Yang. This is why the 6 of Cups is usually the Sex card of the minor arcana.

The symbol of the number 6 is the hexagram, a six pointed star consisting of two interlocked triangles. One triangle is masculine, the other is feminine.
