Question about used decks.

Emily

I have a Cosmic that I took delivery of yesterday, I thought I was only getting the book from an Amazon seller but she put the deck in also.

The outer box is very battered and the cards have been used and are a little grey around the edges but they are all there. I had to sort them out and get them the rightway round and in order. It took me a while but as I was doing it I noticed the energy of the deck, it has a really nice feel to it. I haven't done any readings with it yet but I'm really looking forward to it. :)

My Thoth is very used. So used the cards are soft and not crisp. And yet it has the most wonderful energy to it, felt it right away; as if the previous owner loved those cards.

I don't have any previously owned (loved) decks as of right now, but I've got my eye on a few on Amazon.com and 3 are on their way in the mail from a woman I met on a Yahoo tarot group. I like that I can get them less expensive than new ones and can find a lot of decks my bookstore doesn't carry. They only carry U.S. Game Systems decks, and I've got a looong list of Lo Scarabeo decks I'd like to have. The decks I'm getting in the mail are all around $17, which is close to what you'd pay for them new, but she's including handmade tarot bags with all of them! Actually, she has a bunch for sale if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.picturetrail.com/winterwren I think it's a really good deal with the bags...can't wait to get mine!

I wouldn't have any problems with a used deck, as long as they were not all tore up. You still have to bond with it, just like a new one.

I think it would be fine to use a "used" deck, but I'd cleanse the deck first by smudging and clearing the cards by laying them all out to make sure you have a complete deck.

Would you wear clothing bought at a second-hand store before you washed it? Because there will be residual energy still clinging to the deck from it's prior owner, I think it would be very important to cleanse the deck in some way.

Lillie

Actually, I get most of my clothes from charity second hand shops.
Everything is always washed before it goes on the rails, so I don't need to.
I just wear it.

I have got some well nice clothes that way.

I have no problems with second hand stuff.
Clothes, cards, furniture.
If I didn't buy second hand I wouldn't be able to afford to buy new stuff.
I don't care if people know that, I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of.

Not underwear though. I do draw a line there.

I reckon that my energy is pretty strong. It overwhelms anything that a previous owner has left.

Except that Fantastical!
You got into my dream last night LB!
I reckon you sent a bit of your psychic energy along with the deck, and I picked it up!

But I don't think you'll get the same with the Tavaglione.
I got that second hand, and although it was printed years ago it seemed brand new, and I only ever looked through it, never really used it. Couldn't get a grip on it.
So I doubt there is any of me sticking to it.

It was an OK dream, by the way.
I was just talking to you about something I can't remember anymore.
Probably about that deck.

It's a bit weird, but not freaky or scary, or anything like that.

I've got a couple of used decks and a couple of new ones, and by far the best one energetically is my used Cosmic - it feels so wise!

I wouldn't have a problem with getting another used deck, but only if it was in good condition - I like to use my decks.

More on used or second-hand decks

Edge: Certain subjects tend to arise more frequently than others & the issue of used or second-hand decks such a subject.

Though I see used personal objects such as decks, clothing, jewelry, books, cars & so on to retain the residual energy of its previous owners, that status not an issue. I can truthfully state most of my decks are used. In fact, some like the cars my family has had could not be obtained otherwise so the practical influences.

As for using them myself, never a problem. I routinely put the cards 'in order' towards a two-pronged purpose: as much to determine the deck intact as to 'cleanse' them.

Out of curiosity, for the benefit of the newer audience & for those who may not have seen them, I did a search & found many threads (& know there are likely more). Some of these replies may assist towards providing a broader perspective:

Where used items concerned, consider that library books are essentially used books & by countless hands, too--albeit on a temporary basis.

Btw: A few of my favourite pieces of jewelry given to me with love by previous owners with some even third-hand. & I have also given in kind. Where the energetic concerned, I understand the intent & the practical to rule.

Enjoy the stroll :)

By the way...

Those in like-new condition make wonderful gifts for the Tarot-minded, too.
