Aquila is identified as the vulture that Zeus sent to punish Prometheus. Promotheus asked Zeus to make a choice of two offerings, one was covered with rich fat (but concealed only bones) and the other was a stomach and looked unappetising (but held the delicious innards and fresh flesh). Zeus took the pile wrapped in flesh. This trickery irritated Zeus, so the god took fire away from mankind. Promotheus did not want the mortals to suffer, so he stole some fire from the Olympians, hid it in a fennel stalk, and returned it to mankind. Zeus punished Promotheus by chaining him to a cliff and sending Aquila to tear Promotheus' live apart each day; Promotheus' liver grew back each night to be ready for the next day's excruciating torture. Promotheus is the personification of freedom, the individual who dares to make a free choice, regardless of the consequences. His name means "foresight" and he knew beforehand what he would suffer, yet still chose to do what he did.
