Fairytale Tarot (MRP) -- Knight of Wands

Master_Margarita

The Knight of Wands in this deck is paired with the Russian fairy tale of the magic horse Sivka Burka, one variation of which can be found here.

The tale of Sivka Burka begins with an old peasant with three sons, the youngest of whom--Ivanushka--is regarded as a fool. Something is trampling the fields of the peasant at night. Each son tries and fails in turn, until Ivanushka discovers that it is a magical (and magnificent) horse with a golden saddle and a silver bridle, who promises come to his aid whenever Ivanushka wants, so long as he sets him free. He also tells Ivanuska his name is Sivka Burka.

Soon thereafter, the Tsar decides that he will give his daughter away to whomever can jump high enough to remove her ring from her finger (he's put her in a high tower). Parenthetically--what is it about all these kings and tsars who give their daughters away in the most appalling manner?? <coughs> Ivanushka, with the help of Sivka Burka, and disguised as a handsome man, snatches the ring (and this moment is illustrated on the card) and then goes home with it.

Next, the Tsar holds a big feast. Ivanushka covers the ring, now on his finger, with a bandage, and goes to the feast. The ring is discovered, Ivanuskha calls on Sivka Burka to turn him handsome permanently, the princess recognizes her successful suitor, and they live happily ever after. (At which point he probably makes people start calling him "Ivan," but I digress again.)

So our Ivanushka, not Sivka Burka himself, is the Knight of Wands (although given the culture of the time, Sivka Burka was probably as much an element of fantasy in this tale as any princess. A horse was probably considered more useful. Which is why this story is NOT called "Ivanushka and the Magic Horse"). Ivanushka is perfect for the role. Impetuous, energetic, and above all a showman. Oh, the drama of the ring underneath the bandage at the banquet. The story shows well the hint of recklessness and lack of commitment that differentiates the Knight from the King in this suit.
