I think it's quite a useful tool when using reversals but as with most things in tarot, it's probably best to use it as one of the ways of reading reversals and not the only way of reading reversals.
I tend to leave all cards upright these days and have done for years but depending on the positional meaning and how each card fits into the story that the other cards are telling, I often read a card in a more reversed than an upright way.
