Yi Jing/I Ching Resources

There are several resources on the web for Yi Jing/I Ching translations, plus the translations of the more experienced here who have been doing this for some time.

Here is a link to a site which has very useful information, and includes the complete listing of hexagrams, interpretations, and other valuable information.

According to Richard J. Smith of Rice University:
The two best English-language analyses of the "basic text" of the Yijing
are still not widely available: the Ph.D. dissertations of Kunst (1985),
and Shaughnessy (1983). Other works that deal primarily with the
origins and early development of the Yi include Rutt (1996),
Whincup (1986), and Wu Jing Nuan (1999).

Fulgour, Thank You

Your value is above pearls, Fulgour. Thank you so much. Umm, thinking about it, the Ph.D. theses are available at the granting university's library. I wonder if we might be able to access these documents via the library, or through the authors?

Resources

Hi all-
Newbie here.
Ed Shaughnessy's and Rick Kunst's dissertations are required items in any solid Yijing library, even if you don't agree with where the academics are going with their speculations. They can be obtained through University Microfilms or UMI for US$38 each. There's a link to UMI at www.hermetica.info towards the end of the Yijing Bibliography, but you will probably be able to get them from UMI through your local library and get a discount at the same time.
Rick Kunst's unpublished notes are also available online (huge pdf files, and very hard to read, but good for the diehards). See the hermetica Yijing links section for that.

Dennis Littrell writes: "This particular book is not a popular work on the classic. Instead it is a meticulous scholar's work that presents the new textual discovery to the reader with both the Chinese characters and Shaughnessy's translation appearing on facing pages, noting omissions and puzzlements in the manuscript, etc. His commentary addresses the origins and development of the Yijing including the earlier commentaries by Confucius and others. This is a book for scholars and the most devoted students of the Yijing as well as Chinese history and culture. I should also note that this is not a book about how to use the Yijing for fortune telling. There are many books that work well for that purpose..."

I have ONE and only one book, and I find it insightful, though I don't have anything else to compare it with.

I Ching: A New Interpretation for Modern Times by Sam Reifler

I've had it for several years, but it's still in print. The current ISBN is 0553354248.

Kunst Materials

Thanks to Brad and Fulgour. I went to the UMI page, but they don't have Kunst in their searchable thesis base. If others are able to obtain the order number, please post it. I contacted them about ordering the thesis but haven't heard back from them. When I get the thesis number I'll post it here.

I also downloaded a few pages of Kunst's notes. Very interesting, and he writes in a legible hand. At this point, I'm just a tiny shoot seeking the sun. I'll have to revisit these notes once I become more established.
