Confused on Elemental Spreads

I've been reading T. Michaelson's The Complete Tarot Reader; and I've gotten to the exercise that has the elemental square reading. My question with the elemental square or other elemental spreads is do you take out the four suits and major arcana and shuffle them separately and put them in their particular elements in the spread or do you shuffle all the cards together and let the cards go where they may in the spread? I hope that question didn't sound confusing; because I'm a little confused on how to handle this spread. The first time I did this elemental square spread I took out all of the suits and shuffled them separately and done the reading like this:

1(Ace of Cups) 2(3 of swords)

5(Strength)

3(3 of pentaclesRx) 4(4 of wands Rx)

card 1: My emotions(cups)
card 2: My thoughts(swords)
card 3: My health (pentacles)
card 4: My actions (wands)
card 5: My spirit(trumps)

The second time I did the reading I shuffled all of the cards together and this was what I got:

card 1: 5 of wands Rx
card 2: Devil
card 3: temperance
card 4: Justice Rx
card 5: Hierophant

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
