What gemstones make the best runes??

Cerulean

I forgot to say my shell runes are irridescent

These might be options for those wanting a 'bone' or lightweight option--similar to a pearl, but less costly. They might be a wonderful experimental option--I think above, someone did suggest shells worked fine for them. I included a few picture samples of similar shell materials...

The irridescent shells gave me more confidence to begin working with moonstones as runes...moonstones are a little less hard than regular gemstones...I followed a recommendation I read on the internet to use a little olive oil and a paper towel to help treat the moonstones..it cleaned the stones and didn't hurt the ink/engraving at all. After a soft cleaning, the stones feel better to me.

I do know the moonstones are heavier than my shells, but it's nice to have a set for 'night' reading...the shells work for day, just in my funny eyes.

All the other suggestions of amethyst, red jasper, bronzite and others sound wonderful. I'll have to keep looking around to see all the different kinds!

Best wishes,

Cerulean
