Rider Waite/ Rider Waite Smith.... is there a difference?

SaintOfScreams

I searched the search engine, and could find no answers.

A fellow tarot reader said she was told there is a difference, but she did not know nor did she understand the difference...

Could anyone tell me the difference, if there is any?

Thanks.

No there's no difference. Rider is the company that first published the deck. Pamela Colman Smith is the artist who made the images under the direction of A.E. Waite.

There are many clones under different names, Universal Waite, Golden Rider, Albano Waite, or Radiant Rider Waite, just to name a few, but Rider Waite and Rider Waite Smith are just two ways of saying the same thing.

If you're not aware of it, SaintOfScreams, Pamela Coleman-Smith's name was added in recent years due to the growing awareness that she was not merely the artist but in fact contributed many original ideas. It is a widely held belief that the pictures for the minor arcana are almost entirely her work (probably true) and much of the major arcana too (probably untrue). The debate goes on...
