Connolly: Page of Swords

Sophie-David

The Connolly Page of Swords is intriguing in that the character is androgynous. The head looks quite feminine, with a pageboy cut and a delicate face. But the legs seem quite bulky and masculine. Whatever the gender, the Page seems quite tentative, curious about what is happening down the steps to stage right, but unsure whether to proceed or perhaps to turn back. Quite a contrast with the self-assured King and Queen, the Page lacks the crown with its symbolic inner eye, but does have a blue intellectual cloak, and dull purple dress. The backdrop of the unconscious is a subdued grey and cyan, with rocky squared cliffs topped by fertile if weather worn grass. The steps of the path are broad and square, reflecting well-defined logic but with a rather conservative viewpoint.

In The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals Mary Greer says of the Page of Swords:
You, or someone you know, could be curious about what is next or, if expecting confrontation, defensive and on guard. Or, you might be acting with audacity and daring...At best, you have developed discrimination, repartee, and wit, with the ability to improvise "on the fly."
