Connolly: Five of Pentacles

Sophie-David

The Connolly Five of Pentacles takes an unusual approach to the card traditionally associated with physical, financial, or psychological loss, the card of wandering destitution in the wasteland. In Eileen and Peter Connolly's visualization, a woman is blindfolded within a fertile garden. Behind her lies the security of a five pentacled gate and a beautiful red sky which could be either a sunset or a sunrise. Although she could remove the blindfold herself, she seems content to let her eyes remain covered, ignorant of the beauty and security that still surrounds her. An angel is about to remove her blinders so that she can appreciate the world as it is. This Five suggests that much of our experience of dreams not coming to fruition, and of hardships of various kinds, is made much worse my our unwillingness to open our eyes and celebrate the blessings and joys that still remain, many of which are free and implicit in life itself.
