A Question About The Fool

Erebella

Hello all!

Today, I am creating a profile for The Fool in my Tarot Journal. I am loosely following the 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card and adapting some exercises to fit my personal needs.

However, I ran into something quite perplexing.

The Fool is associated with the element of air and the suit of swords. This makes ZERO sense to me. (Ha. Tarot jokes.) It seems as though The Fool is lacking logic and reasoning - he just began his journey! He knows very little about the world around him - he is an enthusiastic sponge waiting to soak everything up! So in my mind, he is much better suited for fire/wands. Excitement, passion, and maybe a little bit lacking in foresight!

Would someone please be kind enough to explain the logic behind his association with air/swords? Thank you kindly. <3

The Fool is associated with the element of air

Well, of course - he's about to tumble off a cliff into the Air! <laughter>

Exactly! So he needs to LEARN - learning is all about Air. He needs to THINK, and understand his surroundings better - that is all about Air.

Sometimes a card will be associated with an element it NEEDS, as much as an element it has plenty of.

- he is an enthusiastic sponge waiting to soak everything up!

Which is to say, to learn. Which involves thought. Which is Air.

Fool = Middle English: from Old French fol ‘fool, foolish’, from Latin follis ‘bellows, windbag’, by extension ‘empty-headed person’, an 'airhead'. Early depictions of fools often showed them associated with 'wind' type emblems, such as whirly-gigs, or bagpipes.

Also, in cards following the English esoteric tradition, the Fool card is associated with the Hebrew letter Aleph, a mother letter to which the element Air is attributed in the Sepher Yetzira.
