You are a bad person, and where do YOU read ??? })

Hang on - what is WWF ? In MY life it is the World Wildlife Fund - that just occurred to me....

“There would be (and I am saying this for the last time) no problem with reading religious material in the lobby. To read the cards, stick the voodoo dolls with pins, kneel facing mecca, form a prayer circle of two ... no. This all can be done in the privacy of your room without affecting all of the other guests.”
Seafra

Ok I did find where you mentioned this. I guess then you are saying because some people view Tarot cards in a supernatural way or negative, that it can offend. I accept this. But what if I was a guest in you lobby, a paying guest, and I saw someone reading the Bible and I came to you and said, this offends me, will you be so kind as to ask them to put that away....Would you then ask them to?

Well, being that I'm in a heavily Christian area, I tend to either read in personal spaces (e.g. homes) or in the only area New Age store, or if I'm at a Tarot Meetup. Don't forget, I had a negative reaction to reading in a cafe last year.

WWF was World Wrestling Federation (it was called that as I was growing up, when Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Rowdy Roddy Piper were wrestling superstars). Nowadays, it's called WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), and spawned The Rock (now Dwayne Johnson), Jon Sena, and GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling).

And no, I don't watch it. :D But there are lots of ads about it.

Just to jump in for the hell of it - yes, if I ran a hotel - I might well, depending on how OBVIOUS it was what they were reading. Every guest has the right not to be discomfited.

But I would be baffled; reading a book doesn't usually draw attention. As I said - if they read it out loud, I would likely ask them to stop myself. :D But I have said it before and I will again - reading a BOOK - including a tarot book, a porn book with pix, or the Tibetan book of the dead - is NOT as in your face as laying out cards.

And the WWF would help with the eviction })

I agree. Besides, shuffling makes noise, a distinctive sound that would tend to make people turn to see what caused it. Therefore, it is more intrusive than reading a book -- any book -- in silence. Reading a book is a passive activity, book usually held close to the body. Laying out cards requires more space, wider sweeping movements that are again more likely to draw attention. And if you're reading for someone else, you're talking to them, pointing out the cards as you go -- even more obvious and attention grabbing.

Note that the location of the hotel is New England, lots of history and traditional values there, as opposed to some other places. I would think that would make some difference as to what's acceptable or expected by guests and therefore within their comfort zone. It's also important to remember that when you stay in a hotel, ideally it should feel as if it's your home for that period of time. We're most of us a bit fussy about what we allow in our homes.

Mind you, I wish Seafra was wrong, because a part of me wants to see Tarot everywhere, more and more accepted. But ... she's right. There are other less intrusive ways to gain more acceptance of Tarot, and these things take time. And then suddenly we see something accepted everywhere that was taboo before. When I was a girl, women didn't wear trousers to work, girls didn't wear them to school. While I was in junior high or high school that changed. In fact the change swept our culture so rapidly that my six-years-younger brother couldn't remember a time when females in trousers weren't perfectly acceptable. So, you never know. But even today you don't see women wearing trousers to certain formal or tradition-steeped occasions. And someone's private property, where they have a right to their rules and to keep their guests comfortable, isn't the place to start a Tarot revolution.

re. Bible reading - If someone is reading ANY religious material in the normal way someone reads (quietly, to oneself) and is prevented from doing so -- that's a possible legal issue. Am I going to open up a legal issue because this practice bothers someone? This is essentially the question whether the people who pose it know it or not. No, I am not.

Please don't forget -- when you reach into a nightstand in most US hotels and motels you are going to find a book. Gideons International places more than a million bibles every year in the US alone. I have *never* had a guest ask me to remove the bible from the drawer. We have had guests steal them.

My personal view? When the hour is late and someone's alone and far from home and feeling spiritually bankrupt, if that someone finds comfort in that book in that drawer we're all a little better off.

Now -- pass the popcorn :D

ETA: Ah, I see I didn't finish answering direwolf's question. Here's the whole sequence of events I would follow. I would kindly direct you to leave the lobby area after any necessary hotel business between you and I is completed if you are that disturbed by the sight of someone reading a bible. To complete the action on my end I would log our encounter into the "Front Desk Log" which is not unlike a Ship Captain's Desk Log and is considered legal documentation which can be subpoenaed.

(Hotel work isn't for sissies hehehe)

Just what DO you allow and not allow in your lobby, Seafra ? Enquiring minds need to know...... })

Seriously - what have you actually found you really had to act upon ? Would you do anything about someone reading the bible ALOUD ? How far is a couple allowed to go in terms of - um - making out - before you ask them to go upstairs ? Where are you on visiting naturists ? This IS on topic; it is interesting to know at what point the zealous public gets told to stop being silly....

I can see asking them to stop reading cards - I'm sorry, but I do think that's fair. But what upsets the man in the street enough that you have to do something about it is fascinating - as is the fact that you could get done over for stopping someone reading the bible (I'm not saying you should stop them, just that how weird that you can't make your own rules in your own hotel. A hotel here that wouldn't allow gay couples had a long and ghastly court case brought against them.... And the hotel actually WON - on the grounds that the hotel was also the owners' home, and so they had the right not to have their personal religious beliefs infringed upon in their home. Stupid idiots - the attending publicity did them no good at all.....)

You are saying that now but you weren't saying that earlier. You weren't being respectful of other beliefs IMO nor the position I am in as a manager and I see justifications here.

That isn't how you came across at all. I don't mean to browbeat you but I think you really need to go back and read what you posted. Read this entire thread with your eyes fully open. You may see things you never saw about your own opinions before. There's the possibility that in the heat of the moment you said things you didn't mean, acted 'intemperate' if you will. Text is a tough medium.

Good luck finding a spot ! :)

i meant what i said, but text is black and white and people can misinterpret something.i simply tried to explain, and clarify what i was saying to give a bit of background and to answer peoples questions. i could have written my first email that was an essay to cover all these points but i assumed wrongly that people would understand what was said and how it was meant, next time i would write more in the first instance...but i havent changed my stance.

i stick with what i have said so far, i have just expanded on it...assumptions were made that i was saying to go into somewhere and muck rake which is not how i work, but i do stand by what i believe in....just like i would expect everyone too.

its an interesting debate, i have been pleasantly surprised by the conversations here.

The tarot book versus tarot cards was something i didn't expect to be brought up, and the fact people think its different.

A lot of readers have had bad experiences like afrosaxon when out with their cards, and that can knock you (been there).

I must agree that couples with OTT signs of affection should get a ROOM, i dont need to see a couple getting it on in a lobby when they have a room:) but thats likely because i am cynical and single so really its my own issue!

if someone was reading a porn book with pics in a lobby, i might fell slightly uncomfortable if i could see the pics ...but i would move tables away from them as thats my issue not theirs. that person must have some balls to read a book like that in a lobby.
