Here you have a snake with a ring in his mouth, and the man is using like a walking stick, so to speak, but he is not looking at the snake and the ring. To me this seems to indicate that the man has a chance for healing and transformation but he can't see the forest for all the trees. He is analysing everything, the possiblities and the pitfalls of such a thing. He is giving it some serious thought, nevertheless, considering if you look at how close his hand is to the ring (and the snake).
