10.Ametrine

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AMETRINE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ametrine is an unusual crystal quartz that is part amethyst and part citrine. This creates a bi-colored effect, called color zoning,The combination makes each crystal uniquely colored.Ametrine is among an elite group of gemstones that comes from only one source - the Anahi Mine located in the jungles of Bolivia. Ametrine is a relatively new stone and so has no ancient traditions connected with it.It is used by healers today and believed to be a stone that connects the spiritual qualities of amethyst with the dynamic, creative energy of citrine. It is said to bring luck, success and encourage great optimism.Most geological references state that Ametrine was first brought to the gem market in the 1970s. Except there is another story about this special crystal that dates back to the conquistadors stating a quite different story.During the 17th century, a conquistador named Don Felipe married Anakha, the princess to the Aureiros tribe of Bolivia. The mine, named Anahi for the princess, was given to him as part of her dowry. When it came time for Felipe to return to Spain, his princess bride wished to return with him. As the couple attempted to depart, angry tribesmen turned on them and murdered the young princess. The duo colored gem is said to represent the princess' two loyalties: to her husband and to her tribe.Geologists theorize that a deep vent within the Anahi mine created just the right amount of heat, flowing in just the right direction to cause one area of the forming crystals to stay "hotter" than the rest. Creating the perfect balance to form ametrines. Otherwise, these magical gems would have become Amethysts or Citrines.Only two places on the entire planet had just the right circumstances to form Ametrine Crystals. The Anahi Mine in Bolivia and the Hyderabad Mine in India. The Bolivian mine yields about 90% of ametrine being marketed today.

11. Aquamarine

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AQUAMARINE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most aquamarine peices are of a very pale light blue and have a few inclusions (other minerals inside the stone which are considered impurities and reduce the gemstone's clarity and sparkle).Aquamarine is the blue, blue-green or aqua variety of the mineral Beryl. Other colored Beryl gemstones include Emerald (green), Morganite (pink), and Heliodor (greenish-yellow), Goshenite (clear), but other types of Beryl are simply referred to by their color, such as Red Beryl. Aquamarine is colored by the trace amounts of iron that find their way into the crystal structure. Most gem Aquamarines have been heat treated to produce the popular blue-green colors from the less desirable yellow or pale stones.its cousin is the Emerald,The majority of crystals occur in pegmatite veins deep inside the metamorphic rocks where it crystallizes prismatically, sometimes vertically striated and, occasionally, terminated with small pyramidal faces.The leading producer of Aquamarines is Brazil, with many other notable occurences worldwide. The biggest Aquamarine ever mined was found at the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter. According to legend, Aquamarine is the treasure of mermaids, and holds the power to keep sailors safe when at sea. The stone is said to be a particularly strong charm when immersed in water. For these reasons, Aquamarine was dedicated to a number of sea goddesses, including the Greek love goddess, Aphrodite, whose name means "born of the foam". To recharge and cleanse your Aquamarine, place it in water on the night of the Full Moon.It is the anniversary gemstone for the 19th year of marriage.

12.Carnelian

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CARNELIAN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Carnelian is a form of Quartz, the most common form of rock in the Earth's crust. Specifically, geologists classify Carnelian as a Chalcedony; a member of the cryptycrystalline or microcrystalline group within the Quartz family. Cryptocrystalline crystals are too small to be seen, even with a microscope.

Having the same chemical make up as Agate, when Carnelian grades into brown it is known as Sard. When it contains bands of white, it is known as Sardonyx. In addition, some very dark brown Carnelian can be classified as Jasper. The distinction between these is very fine and relies more on visual appearance than scientific analysis. As a result, it is very possible that one man's Carnelian may be another man's Sard, Agate or Jasper. Chemically, Carnelian is composed of Silicon Dioxide, SiO2, and gets its red color from Hematite (Iron-Oxide, FeO2) impurities. Many Carnelians offered today are Agates which are dyed and then heat treated. Natural Carnelian will usually exhibit a cloudy distribution of color.

The name Carnelian heralds from the Latin word "carnis" and translates to "flesh," probably noted as one of the many shades of the stone. Another name for Carnelian was Cornelian, most likely derived from the Latin word "cornum" meaning "cherry". Carnelian's translucent color ranges from yellow-orange to reddish-brown to a deep red, and is enhanced by exposure to the sun.Cleanse and charge Carnelian with sunlight. They can be used to dispel negativity from other crystals and stones.

Occurring in the cavities of many forms of rock, Carnelian most often develops from the silica-rich soils which solidified at low temperatures. It typically forms in nodules, cone-shaped masses or groups of stalactites which radiate outward from a central axis. India has some of the oldest Carnelian deposits, especially around Bengal, Deccan and Ratnapur. Indian Carnelian is most often a very strong reddish-brown color.Many sources report that Carnelian be a powerful activator to the second Chakra, called the Sacral Chakra, which relates to a sense of Self... along with the five senses, creativity, reproduction, sexuality and self-gratification Carnelians were used in Ancient Egyptian magick as protection for both the living and the dead. A Carnelian in the form of the "tjet," symbol of Mother Isis, was placed on the neck of a mummy to ensure the protection, safe passage, and rebirth of the spirit in the afterlife. Another Carnelian amulet was the Eye of Horus, which is still believed to offer protection against the evil eye. In Roman times, Carnelian was engraved with the head of a lion or a great leader.

13.Chrysopase

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHRYSOPASE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony (quartz) which is an opalescent apple green color. Most green gemstones owe their color to chromium or vanadium, but chrysoprase derives it's beautiful coloration from the nickel content it contains. Which means that it is possible for the color to fade if it is subjected to too much sunlight.
The name chrysoprase comes from the Greek chrysos meaning 'gold' and prason, meaning 'leek' or 'bloom'. The Greeks bestowed this name due to the presence of the golden drops that appear to be contained in the stone.Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Brazil, the Ural Mountains and in the USA, it is the valued form of the chalcedony group.

Ancient Greek, Romans and Egyptians used chrysoprase in jewelry and other ornamental objects, and due to it's semi-opaque green color it is often mistaken for imperial jadeite.Due to the fact that substantial deposits of this gemstone were mined in Silesia in the fourteenth century large amount of chrysoprase were used for the now infamous decoration of the chapel of St. Wenceslas in Prague.Other members of the cryptocrystalline quartz family include agate, carnelian, and onyx. Unlike many non-transparent members of the quartz family, it is the color of chrysoprase, rather than any pattern of markings, that makes it desirable.Chrysoprase helps to make conscious what is currently unconscious. It's vibrations have a tranquilizing effect that seem to bring damaging subconscious thought to the foreground, where they can be assessed and dealt with properly.If used in jewelry creations, chrysoprase should only be set or used with silver, and it will hold more power if it is carved in the shape of a heart.Chrysoprase must be worn or laid on for quite a long time when used for healing purposes, it also must be cleansed briefly under running water before each use and then recharged overnight among a host of rock crystals at least every two weeks

14.Herkimer Diamond

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HERKIMER DIAMOND
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

a Quartz crystal.Herkimer Diamond is the name given to the beautiful, rare and widely sought after, naturally double-terminated Quartz crystals that were named after the place they were first formally discovered in the late 1700s - a small town called Little Falls in Herkimer County, New York. For this, they are sometimes also called Little Falls Diamonds or Middleville Diamonds after the towns from which they are now copiously mined. Though rare throughout the world, Herkimer Diamonds can be found abundantly all across the Mohawk River Valley in upstate New York. Some fine places to go where you can find and/or mine your own Herkimer "Diamonds" are at places called, what other than, "Ace of Diamonds Mine" and Herkimer Diamond Mine", both in Middleville, town of Newport, Herkimer County, NY, or "Diamond Acres" (Hastings Farm), Fonda, Mohawk Township, Montgomery County, NY. Although predominantly found in the northeast U.S., this unique form of Quartz has also been found in Arizona in the U.S., Afghanistan, Tibet, China, Norway and a few other places throughout the world.

crystals formed in cavities within the dull gray sedimentary form of Dolomite, called Dolostone - a relative of Limestone - approximately 500 million years ago during the Cambrian Age. At that time, a shallow sea whose waters lapped against the shores of the ancestral Adirondack Mountains, deposited the sediments which under years of weight and pressure became Dolostone. While still under the sea, water seeped into the forming rock, dissolving part of it and creating cavities within - cavities, called "vugs", that ranged anywhere from pea size to several feet across. Like most geode style crystals, Herkimer Diamonds began their journey of growth when a tiny amount of that mineral rich water stayed trapped within the cavity. The double termination of the Herkimer occurs because they were allowed to grow with virtually little or no contact with the host stone while nestled inside the vug. On the hardness scale, and as with all Quartz crystals, they register a 7. They can be found clear, cloudy or with impurities - the clearest specimens coming out of the NY locations - and can also be found in Quartz's various forms and styles, such as clusters, scepters, twins, phantoms, enhydros, etc. I prefer the single crystals and am amazed at their clarity. In fact, it was their crystal clear appearance that led the founders to liken them to, and almost mistake them for, real Diamonds. But Quartz crystals they are. And like the water from which they are birthed, these sparkling natural wonders do carry the attributes of the Element, Water - the feminine qualities of intuition, psychic ability, the knowledge and wisdom of the mystical and the magickal, etc., but as a Quartz, they contain the attributes and metaphysical properties of all four Elements - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Most of the Herkimers that I own and work with lean strongly toward Fire and Air, lending them the ability to create the spark of action to my thoughts and inspirations. (In other words, they light a fire under my... um, intentions.. hehehe.)

the "Stone of Attunement", I find it to also be the "Stone of Total Awareness". Herkimer Diamonds can be used to attune oneself to another person, place or thing. They are excellent in aiding us in getting to know something or someone more intimately and fully. They can be used by two people who are not physically together, to keep in 'touch' and to help bind themselves further to one another, as the crystal enhances their knowledge and awareness of each other. This works well for groups too, helping them work together harmoniously so that what they are working to accomplish will manifest in the most cohesive manner and with the best results. In another aspect, Herkimers may be used to garner information as well as give it, as they possess an uncanny 'give & take' ability, meaning they are exceptionally adept and handy at simultaneously sending and receiving. They are a very nice bridging stone. There is no problem in programming a Herkimer; they quickly deliver messages or work to manifest whatever they are programmed for.crystal-clear visions, Herkimers are powerful for tapping into hidden knowledge. There are no secrets kept from these scrutinizing crystals. They are both sleuth and messenger, as they laser in on the hidden and unearth what you need to know. I call them one of the great spies of the mineral world...your own personal private detective...but always helping to keep your intent pure. In this viewing and being viewed capacity, these little gems are most helpful for Astral Travel, psychic insight and, of course, for such telling revelations.

And last but not least, another fine quality of the Herkimer Diamond is its strong ability to promote and enhance dreams, lucid dreams and to aid us in dream recall. Place a Herkimer inside your pillowcase and then record what dreams you have. I guarantee you, your dreams will be prolific, although possibly just a bit strange at first as the crystal aligns itself with how best to transfer the information to your psyche. (I can readily attest to this..lol) In meditation, and for enhanced visualization, hold two Herkimers, one in each hand, and with one of its points facing inward toward your body while the other faces outward. Place your receptive hand on your brow (Third Eye) and your dominant projective hand on your Solar Plexus area. This will help arc your gathered insights from the Brow to your area of personal power at the Solar Plexus. What you envision or what spark of wisdom comes to you will immediately be bridged to your reaction and actions. Herkimers work with an unrestrained enthusiasm and possess the power to bring those sudden flashes of inspiration, knowledge or wisdom. When working with these crystals, be prepared for many an "ah ha!" moment... not much unlike the feeling you get when you actually take your hammer and chisel to a piece of Dolostone, crack it open and have it suddenly reveal a pristine Herkimer Diamond surprise inside! Breathtaking.

15.Emerald history

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EMERALD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Emerald derives it's glorious green color from the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds are rarely flawless, therefore stones are often enhanced by oiling them to hide the imperfects. As well, the step cut (or emerald cut) is used to maximize the stone.
Ancient mythology teaches us that the emerald was associated with the Mercury, who was known to be the messengers of the gods, and of travel. It thus makes perfect sense that the emerald is commonly referred to as the Travelers Protection Stone.

A lesser known "odd" fact of the emerald is that when subjected to heat, it will actually sweat or expel water. Ancient writings speak of this extraordinary phenomenon.The proper name for the emerald is beryl, but there are different colors of beryl. Emerald Green is the color as well as the stone. When blue is added to the green, the beryl is known as Aquamarine. Pink beryl is morganite, yellow beryl is golden beryl, yellow-green beryl is heliodor. There is also a red beryl, but it is quite rare.

An emerald of the right shade of green can be more valuable than a diamond. The finest emeralds are found in South America in Colombia, where they have been mined for over 400 years. The gem was a favorite in pre-Columbian Mexico and Peru, where it was cut in intricate designs. The treasure taken back to Spain by early explorers included emeralds.Emerald is a stone of love and romance. It brings and enhances joy, cleansing, clairvoyance, memory, and faith. It also benefits intuition and communication, and promotes truthfulness. Emerald is associated with the heart chakra.
The emerald is the sacred stone of the goddess Venus. It was thought to preserve love. The emerald has long been the symbol of hope. It is considered by many to be the stone of prophecy. For some the emerald acts as a tranquilizer for a troubled mind. The emerald is said to bring the wearer reason and wisdom. The strongest time for the powers of the emerald is said to be spring.Lucky for love, give your lover an emerald to stay faithful.
In several cultures the emerald was the symbol for fertilizing rain. In the Christian faith it is the symbol of faith and hope.

Emeralds are known to heal both the physical heart as well as emotional love. They can help backaches when worn on the index finder of the left hand of a healer. A healer may use a ring while the patient lies on his stomach, the healer holding the ring about two inches above the backbone and create small circles, slowly up and down the spine.
A powerful high energy stone, the emerald strengthens the eyes, heart, immune and nervous systems.The power of the Emerald is highest at the full moon. Some cultures thought the emerald would heal any disease of the eye. The emerald would be placed in a container of water overnight and the water would be poured on the eyes the next day.Emerald is a stone of great harmony, wisdom and love. Giving your lover an Emerald will bring the lover closer if the giver's motives are pure love. The Emerald can be a bridge between 2 people. The Emerald vibrates with love.

16. Moon Stone history

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MOON STONE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Named for its resemblance to the Moon, Moonstone is actually a variety of Orthoclase Feldspar that contains a schiller (shimmering) effect or adularescent sheen. Adularescence is described as "an effect seen on certain minerals (the most famous, Opal and Moonstone) which causes it to display a billowy, rounded, ghost-like reflection with a bluish-whitish color emanating from the surface when the mineral is cut into a cabochon. It is caused by structural anomalies or build up of water in the mineral." Adularescent is derived from the mineral name, Adularia, of which Moonstone is a variety of. Polished Moonstones also commonly exhibit chatoyancy (a narrow band of reflected light that produces a "cat's eye" effect) or asterism (a six-rayed star effect produced by reflected or transmitted light). Found as a rock-forming mineral in igneous, plutonic, and metamorphic rocks, Moonstone breaks (or cleaves) into blocky chunks very often at 90º angles creating tabular crystals. Most are complexly twinned, meaning they often grow as several sets of two interwoven crystals that are mirror images of each other.

The most common Moonstone in the Feldspar family is that of the mineral Adularia, but many famous and rarer specimens are from the Plagioclase Feldspars of Albite (Sodium Aluminum Silicate), along with the Oligoclase and Labradorite varieties. A popular semi-precious stone, Moonstone comes in a variety of colors and shades, but is most often a whitish-blue. Other colors range anywhere from colorless to silvery-white, yellow to orange, green to gray, brown, peach, pink and a type that is multi-colored called Rainbow Moonstone. Other names for Moonstone are Ceylonese Opal, Water Opal, Girasol, Fish-Eye and Wolf's-Eye. The highest and most sought after quality Moonstones come from Sri Lanka.

Moonstone is associated with all goddesses, but especially the Moon goddesses. Resembling the Moon or "moonshine", the ancient Romans believed the stone was actually formed from moonlight. In the Orient, people believed Moonstones were actual rays of moonlight that had solidified, and that the shimmering light held within the stone was a good spirit that lived there. People in ancient India also thought along these lines, and the stone is still considered sacred in India today. Amulets of Moonstone were frequently hung in fruit trees to ensure fruitful and abundant crops. In Asia and Europe the stone was associated with love and fidelity and was often worn when trying to attract a faithful lover. It was believed that if held in the mouth, Moonstone would help one make proper decisions. This versatile stone was also used in ancient times to cure insomnia. Due to its association with water, Moonstone is said to be protective of those at sea. It is also protective of those that travel at night and especially during New Moon phases, and was once called the "Traveler's Stone". It was also thought to protect against insanity, epilepsy, and any adverse wanderings of the mind. The ancient Greeks called Moonstone "Aphroselene" after the goddesses Aphrodite (love) and Selene (moon).The moonstone in India is quite a sacred stone, it is only permitted to be displayed on a yellow cloth. In this culture they called the moonstone Candra Kanta, and it is told that moonlight from a full moon gives the gemstone occult and magical powers. It is believed to bring much good fortune and allows one to see the future.

To dream of moonstone means travel and good health, but may also symbolize the unfolding of spiritual and psychic development.Wear this stone when giving divination and reading, though be prepared to receive secret information that the person might not want discussed at any time.

18.Amber history

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AMBER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

this attractive gem is not a stone at all, but is, rather, an ancient fossilized tree resin that once flowed from the wound of a conifer. The pine trees from which Amber hails are no longer in existence, and the specimens of their once life-giving resins which we hold today are roughly between 25 - 50 million years old. I think it fitting that just as Imbolc which means "in the belly" and Oimelc (or Oimelg) which means "ewe's milk" which has begun to flow... so, too, was Amber once in the belly of the tree whose essence flowed forth to gift us in its new form.

The name Amber derives from the Arabic word "ambar" which refers to ambergris, a secretion from the sperm whale which is used in making perfume. The only similarity between the two, though, is color, for they are without a doubt two totally separate things. Although both are often transported on the waves of the sea, it is this, along with their color similarity, which was most likely how the two may have been once confused. Amber registers only 2 to 2½ on the Mohs Scale and is light enough that it can float on salt water. And it does...for Amber is often found in or near the ocean, with its deposits existing in sediments along the shore. Its most prevalent locales are on the shores of the Baltic Sea

Amber (also known as Succinite) is most often a transparent yellow to orange color, but can be found in shades of brown, red, green (often enhanced), clear, and even a highly sought after Dominican blue. This Sabbat, though, we concentrate on the golden yellow variety, called "Gold of the North" by the ancient Greeks and Romans. For, likened to the Sun and once thought by the Greco-Romans to actually be sunlight trapped within the resin, Amber personifies the warmth and renewal aspects of the Sun God at this time of year. This interesting mineraloid, with its often small insects and/or other bits of organic material that are literally trapped inside it, nicely mimics our own current situation of still being somewhat immobilized and imprisoned by the cold grip of Winter, but at the same time allows us to see the promise of what lies within - and that is, the hope of renewal and the first breath of Spring, as we sense new life beginning to stir beneath the still-frozen topsoils. I see Amber as an excellent window into the past that keeps an optimistic eye on the future.

Even though this organic gem can be found riding the ocean currents, Amber's Element is Fire. It is one of the sacred stones of Helios, the god who chariots the Sun across the sky. But Amber has also always been associated with the feminine, and is often called the "Stone of the Mother Goddess." This dual association makes Amber quite relative to both the Sun God and the Goddess Brighid who holds the blue flame, both of whom we acknowledge and honor during Imbolc.

Within its Fire attributes of vitality, courage and purification, there are many legends surrounding Amber. To those in the Far East it was thought to be drops of solidified dragon's blood. To the Vikings it was known as "Freyja's Tears" and was said that the goddess once traded her favors to the Dwarves in exchange for an Amber necklace. In ancient Greek mythology, Amber was created when Helios' son, Phaeton, was killed as a result of Zeus' lightning that flung him off his father's chariot and into the river Eridanus where he drowned. So grief-stricken were his sisters that they simply transformed into trees but continued to weep golden tears of Amber. The early Christians saw Amber as tears that were shed by the birds during Christ's crucifixion. The Chinese believed this golden gem held the "souls of many tigers and many suns". And in several cultures around the globe, a general Old World legend was that Amber was formed by the setting rays of the sun as they touched the ocean's horizon.

One of the earliest records that refers to Amber was found carved on a stone obelisk in Egypt and dates back to 883 BCE. It reads: "Ashur-Nasir-Apal, the ruler of Assyria, sent his people to the land of amber where the seas wash amber ashore like copper…". But the use of Amber goes back much farther than that. The discovery of Amber beads, amulets and artifacts in various locations and burial sites have shown that this magnificent resinous gem was revered throughout the ages—the earliest known, being the Paleolithic Era.

Some ancient uses of Amber (many of which are still used today) included... burning it in fire ceremonies to release its light and to protect from and clear negativity; as a gateway to the Astral during shamanic ritual; as an amulet by Roman gladiators to instill courage, drive away fear, and to protect against danger; in love potions and rituals due to Amber's attracting qualities, for when rubbed, Amber emits an electrical magnetic charge (and in fact, "elektron" was the ancient Greek term for Amber, from which our word "electricity" is derived); and for healing of many kinds worldwide. Amber has been used as an antibiotic, usually in an elixir. Physically, it is also known to be good for alleviating stomach and digestive disorders, throat, thyroid and glandular problems, kidney dysfunctions, and for uplifting and relieving depression. For the latter, this magickal 'stone' brings with it a sense of renewal, sunny thoughts, and recharges one's energy and stamina...things usually very much needed at this time of year. Known as the "Honey Stone" or "Petrified Sunlight", Amber does bring soothing light and warmth to those who use or wear it
