otherworld dream

BrightEye

This morning I dreamt of three figures standing close together (as if one) on a shore. There was a boat nearby that had brought them there. I heard very clearly the words 'you have arrived'.

The scenery reminded me of Gustave Dore's illustrations of Dante's 'Divine Comedy', probably because I'd studied the illustrations the night before -- I'm working on a series of drawings that are also a kind of otherworld journey. The boat in the dream reminded me of the ferry that takes the souls of the dead to the afterworld. What struck me and what I found myself wondering in the dream was the number three. In Dante there is Dante and his guide Virgil, so my dreaming self wondered 'who is the third?' Which then reminded me of a passage in T S Eliot's 'The Waste Land':

“Who is the third who walks always beside you?
When I count, there are only you and I together
But when I look ahead up the white road
There is always another one walking beside you
Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded
I do not know whether a man or a woman
-But who is that on the other side of you?”

Why this clear message of arrival in the dream I wonder? Because I don't feel as if I've arrived anywhere (though maybe the message is related to my project). And any thoughts on why the number 3?
