Tarot deck & art project feat. Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin +...!

This sounds interesting! A Tarot deck created by famous fashion designers and photographers. The exhibit, "CONTEMPORARY MAGIC: A TAROT DECK ART PROJECT" is private, but they do have open hours on certain days. I am going next week (during an open viewing time) :).

Stacy Engman curates the first contemporary art Tarot Card Deck in history that features original artwork from a wide spread mix of the world’s top creative icons.

For this project, an interdisciplinary mix of today’s top creative icons have each interpreted a Tarot card using their own iconography. Each artist has been matched with a Tarot card based on archetypal themes that their work reference. For example, Tracey Emin is matched with the Empress card as it is the most sensual of the deck, Terence Koh is contributing The Lovers card for his work about lovers and his zines, Will Cotton has taken on the Four of Coins as it speaks about gluttony, Kalup Linzy was matched with the Tower because of the impending drama found in his soap opera works, etc.

The exhibition will be on view during the month of November 2010 at the National Arts Club in New York City
I found the exhibit information from an article about the project. According to Nylon, they are going to release a full deck in 2011! The Nylon link also has some of the cards.

Here's an article from Stylist:

Tarot Cards Get the Designer Treatment Thanks to Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood, and More

Fashion, art, and magic collide in "Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project," a new exhibit arriving at New York City's private National Arts Club in Gramercy Park.

Curated by Stacy Engman, 78 fine artists (Will Cotton, Ryan McGinness, Terence Koh), photographers (Terry Richardson, Patrick McMullan), and fashion designers including Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, and Christian Louboutin were commissioned to design a 7" x 10" tarot card of Engman's choosing reinterpreted with their own iconography, all adding up to a full and artful deck.

While the exhibit is open to non-club members by appointment only, StyleList got a sneak peek at the cards, including one of our favorites: Louboutin's Nine of Cups, which represents self-indulgence and power and features an illustration of a woman smoking, drinking, and playing with stilettos.

Westwood's The Chariot card, on the other hand, represents change and carving new paths and features a photograph of Pamela Anderson looking sexy driving a golf cart. Her own chariot of sorts, we suppose.

Richardson and Jacobs also employed photography for their cards.

Jacobs's choice for Knight of Pentacles is a picture most likely repurposed from an old campaign that shows model Kristen McMenamy wearing one of Jacobs's designs and flashing her bare crotch. (Um, yeah. We're not sure how we'd handle pulling that one).

Controversial lensman Richardson's card, Two of Wands, was quite tame in comparison, featuring himself holding two guns in a Wild West scenario to illustrate the concept of imagining one's own destiny.
This is such an interesting project! Just look at some of the cards.

I hope others find this interesting. I love Christian Louboutin's 9 of Cups. Each card features the designer's name on it (so it's clear who created each one).

Come on, you like it.
