Tarot de Marseille - Reading Circle - September/October 2011 - Sign Up

Hello Lee, hello Luminosa,

great that you are joining! Let's see if some more people get on board within the next week.

It will be very interesting to see what decks you will all be using, there are so many different ones! I mostly work with the Flornoy Dodal for myself, but when I read for others (which is very rare so far) I also like to use the Piatnik Marseille (Ignaz Krebs), it is very charming...

Have a good evening!

My first deck was a Grimaud - I have tried to find another, but haven't yet! Currently I have a Lo Scarabeo Tarot de Marseille (Burdel). I also have a French titled 1JJ Swiss, but my understanding that it is not exactly Tarot de Marseille, though it is of a similar type. I don't care for the Lo Scarabeo deck I have, but it is the only one I have at the time!

Me, personally, I think it is more important that you are comfortable with a deck than to stay within the very strict borders of the Tarot de Marseille. I would totally accept the 1JJ (or the Vieville, or the Tarot de Bologna, or the Soprafino...) for a reading for me.

It might be more difficult for the others who might not have that deck to follow your reading, but if you post images of the cards you have drawn?

Or should we only use the Tarot de Marseille in this exchange, to make it easier for everybody to learn from everybody's readings?

I can post images of the 1JJ swiss if I use it. I do hope to get a Grimaud to replace the deck I had in 1979! I keep looking, but they seem to be rather expensive.

Hi Le Charior,

I am modest and use only one, the Marseille Grimaud, but I like to make comparisons among the several decks of the Marseille family using internet images and I have had lots of surprises. Very slowly I am trying to understand the minors, meanwhile use only majors.

Oi Luminosa!

I also only have Grimaud, two decks. And I prefer to stick with Marseille, but I'm open to read other types, however, as symbols differ in meaning when represented differently, it will be difficult for me to read say a Lo Scarabeo, since I'm not familiar with that deck. Even the Hadar and Camoin that are pretty close to Grimaud have subtleties in their representations that give different meaning to the reading.

So...

I'm Grimaud.

E também sou de São Paulo!

Beijos,
Lumena.

I have always disliked the Grimaud. It was my first Marseille deck. I bought a French/English one in New York City about 30 years ago. I didn't like the overuse of the flesh color and I didn't like the blue/black bilingual titles.

A few weeks ago, unaccountably, I suddenly fell in love with the Grimaud. I decided to get either a French or an English one, I didn't care which, as long as it wasn't the bilingual one. I managed to obtain an early '70s deck with the thick cardstock. It just came today, yay! I probably paid too much for it , but what can you do?

So the once-disliked Grimaud is now my favorite deck. :)

Edited to add: Thanks, Le Charior, for organizing this.

Hi Lumen,

Que bom que estamos no mesmo grupo (Nice that we are in the same group)! and Lee, I understand, love is love!

Lee: Thank you, it's my pleasure! I am learning so incredibly much on this forum, all the old threads on the Marseille are a true treasure of knowledge to me. And this here is the only way for me to try to develop my understanding of the tarot and my reading skills. I am still in the Tarot closet, so to say, when it comes to family and friends :)

Chiska: I have a bilingual (English - French) Grimaud that I got in a trade that i do not really like. I still have to discover the attraction of the Grimaud, so far the colors are really bothering me, too... It is Deck 11 (on page 6 of the thread) here: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=57491 It is surely not the nicest version of the Grimaud, due to the bilingual titles the images are cut a little and there is a small, but rather annoying (to me) Copyright on every card. I have a mini Grimaud that I sometimes take with me, and that is enough for me. Might be too late for this round, but if you are interested I would be happy to send it to a new home where it might be actually appreciated more, and used. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Even if I think the Burdel by Lo Scarabeo is a perfectly fine deck, of what I have seen online. It is this one here, right? http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/burdel-marseilles/
But of course it is a personal thing if you connect with a deck or not.

There is a Dussere facsimile of an early Grimaud which has less intense coloring than the latest Grimaud.
I never liked the bilingual version for some reason.
The Lo Scarabeo Burdel is quite nice. The Burdel apparently is derived from the same (or similar) source as the Conver.

le_charior

Grimaud or Conver

Instead of the Grimaud, why not get a Conver right away? Seems to me more "historically correct" when it comes to colors etc. And for people who don't like photographic reproductions like the Heron version, there is the new restoration by Yoav Ben-Dov: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=163515 (That I still haven't received, damn you, German post office who seems to have lost it...) But I think it looks beautiful! And it is really not expensive, even including shipping!

Edited: Sorry if this is going off topic a little... maybe we should start a new thread which is THE best Tarot de Marseille :) And which ones are available for a reasonable price... I remember being quite lost in the beginning, before i slowly started forming an opinion for me by spending days and days reading old threads and looking at a lot of decks online...
