Maybe you should just use a smaller crystal first. Like testing it out to see how much an effect a small crystal would have. I guess you would only need a balancing stone when you feel the blue crystal you're using is doing its job too effectively and it's already giving you an overdose.
I have not read that you need to "always" use a balancing stone to offset the effects of another. For certain instances when the effect is strong, they will only advice that you use for a short period of time. For another, like a rose quartz, they will advise you to use it with amethyst if you have too many amorous suitors to ward off
