The Faeries Oracle by Brian Froud

The Happy Squirrel

I can't not overstate how I would usually glaze over the word "faeries" and just move on.

Brian Froud is one of my favourite artists of all time. Due to my prejudices against all fairy decks :p I completely missed this until it was mentioned by someone whose esoteric learning I respect.

I ordered it without even looking for the images of the cards online. Very unlike me.

Anyone has this deck? And how has it been working for you?

There is this YouTuber who went through the deck rather well:

There's actually an entire section devoted to this deck and its sequel, Heart of Faerie: http://www.tarotforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=31

I have both. Be prepared. There's nothing fluffy about these faeries. They don't pull any punches. :D

Aha! Thanks! Yes I heard about that! That is why I thought now this might just be the Faeries for me!

Any thoughts on this in comparison to the second one?

I have been having trouble with tapatalk as well as accessing the forum on my desktop :( Can't open that link ...

EDIT: desktop kept trying to open this site via tapatalk which is weird... anyway, fiddles later, I saw that thread on the study section :)

I have been looking at the Tarot of the Secret Forest and Tarot of the Hidden Realm (I know this is the oracle section) but just kept feeling that something was missing with those. When I saw this deck I knew why :)

I don't find a ton of difference personally, but I've seen others say that Heart of Faerie feels more grounded, better suited to practical, real world readings versus introspective spreads.

Well, I have both of these. :joke: Hidden Realm is actually not a bad deck to pair with either of Froud's oracles; there's a certain similarity there.

Secret Forest is in a class by itself. It's by far the hardest deck I have for reading. It's dark...filled with leaf mould and mushrooms and decaying things, and those Fae are NOT the cutesy playful wish-granting type or even the tricksters of some myths; rather, they're the kidnap you and tuck you away in another world for a thousand years kind (if you're lucky and not simply dead when they're done with you). It's lush and provocative. It's really, really a lot of work. But it's worth it.

Looks like the Faeries Oracle is more my kind of deck than the Heart of the Faeries :)

As for Tarot of the Secret Forest, that is my kind of deck too! Will go to the Tarot section now and ask more questions about it :D

I have both th FO and HOF and I combine them!! I don't see this as a deck of cards, rather a portal to another realm, where I get to play with these magical beings!! Seriously these have been by my side through so many ups and downs and I can't imagine life without them!! Enjoy your journey with the fae as it is truly wonderful ☺
Ps I have the secret forest deck and hate it...it creeps me out big time :/

I think the Brian Froud decks are vastly different from other faery decks I've had. I personally think it's energy is very much unlike that of the Tarot of the Hidden Realm, and I actually prefer Tarot of the Hidden Realm lately as far as reading decks go.

But the Faeries' Oracle is beautiful and it's a very well thought out deck with an effective structure (I love the Singer cards), and it reads well once you get to know it (which took some time for me). It has an excellent book, as I'm sure you've heard by now - everyone talks about that with this deck, and rightly so! I used to work with it a lot more than I do now... but that's more of a reflection of my interests getting pulled elsewhere than a reflection of the deck itself.

I didn't really vibe with the Heart of Faerie Oracle, though I will hold onto it. It's a playful deck, but not very reliable. The Heart of Faerie has way more sting to it, in my experience, and the readings themselves are so unpredictable and sometimes very confusing. Sometimes it has been "kind." But usually, it's as though I find it more mischievous (in a terribly non-useful way) in comparison to the Faerie's Oracle which actually has more of a helper vibe to me. Though I'm sure others will have had the opposite experience!

HOF and the FO to me is like talking to my buddies! I love the energy of these decks.
