Deck 45 and 46... And I've Run Out Of Space!!!!

Well, I got my 45th and 46th Tarot deck today (Goddess Tarot and Tarot of The Orishas) and I have now officially got no room left to store these decks! Hmmm... Gonna have to get creative with this one!

Well, to give you a quick review of the Tarot of the Orishas...

A very unusual deck, I doubt anybody could read with it effectively! However, it is very useful to furthur your studies because this deck associates the Gods of Candomblé and Santeria with the cards... It is also a Bilingual deck, which means it has titles in Spanish and English, and half the book is Spanish too! I've still got to look at this deck some more before I decide whether or not I like it...

I'm telling ya....make art! :)

Zhritza  10 Apr 2002
I've got the Tarot of the Orishas. I like it, but you're right, it's tricky. It has 84 or so cards - a few of the major arcana are omitted because they do not have Santería/Yoruba parallels, and several are added. Also, the suits have a different arrangement of cards. The art is semi-realistic and pretty detailed.

Out of space? Gosh, me too... :) I've had an unusually high volume of incoming decks over the past few weeks. Right now half of them are in a pile by my computer.

Hi

I bought one of those plastic rolling carts with wheeles and have been putting my decks in there. Works great. Had a friend over last weekend and pulled all the drawers out so we could look at my decks (I don't mind people looking :) ) And my Boyfriend didn't know I had so many decks (over 100 ) and he mentioned that those wheels probably weren't made to hold the weight. :) Made his eyes bug to see so many decks though.

I'm definitely in the same bind as you Kiama! I've got 4 decks on the way and have NO place to put them!!!
What a horrible problem to have! LOL

Kiama  10 Apr 2002
*Phew* I'm glad I'm not the only one who's run out of space!

Qolus: The Tarot of the Orishas has 77 cards... Some people might not even class it as Tarot at all! I'm getting a little more used to it though... The more I look at some of the cards, the more I see parallels. Although I still maintain that The HPS and Empress are the wrong way round!

did anyone else see the post, maybe a week back, from a person who couldn't afford a tarot deck? she made her own using file cards and playing cards, and wanted to know if it would work.

Kiama  10 Apr 2002
I saw it: Very good idea actually! I have some revision cards I reckon I'd be able to use for just such a creative endeavor... (I can see deck 49 coming soon!)

I took delivery of deck 5 last week, the Tiny Universal Waite, and decks 6 and 7 yesterday - The Celtic Dragon tarot and the Robin Wood :) Very happy but not intending to order anymore decks no matter how hard they cry out 'buy me' lol :)

Edited to say:- well I might just buy the book that goes with the Robin Wood - The Celtic Dragon tarot came all boxed up with its own book and a small cardboard box for me to keep the deck in :)

Hi Kiama,

Got the same problem at the moment. I am also looking for a nice, practical storing possibility for my collection.

One of my friends has bought a couch table with a glass cover and a kind of drawer in it to display her most beautiful decks but that won't do for avid collectors like us!

Pollux  11 Apr 2002
Mh... I thought that hanging the decks to the ceiling was a good suggestion... :(

Oh, I tried this one. Didn't work: I kept on banging my head, and the decks just kept on falling down again.... :(

I kind-of have the same problum! I don't have too many decks for the bookshelf YET. But almost! I think the rolling cart with plastic drawers is a good idea! I've also thought of a footlocker. Or maybe another bookshelf? I'm still not certain if , ultimately I'd like to display them all where guests can see them , like on a bookshelf OR have them more hidden , say in a footlocker or cabinet with doors? I'd probubly feel better having them more hidden.

Lee  15 Apr 2002
but seriously, folks -- do you think storing decks vertically on the shelf might be bad for them over time? Or perhaps storing them horizontally might be bad for them too, if they're in a pile and putting weight on each other...

Worriedly,
Lee

god, lee! do ya think? i wish i hadn't come here before i went to bed! now i'm going to be up all night worrying about all the decks in the world that don't have a good safe place to live...is there a department of tarot protective services? some decks may need to be removed from the homes of their abusive owners and put in foster tarot homes until the owner shows evidence of providing adequate housing. i'll start checking in the morning. maybe i'll be able to sleep now that i have a plan of action. :P kiama, you're first on my list to report! LOL

catlin  16 Apr 2002
Hey truth,

That was a good one! What about founding a tarot shelter association?

Guess I could offer a nice foster place for some more decks (guess where?)

:) :) :)

*Kiama gasp*

On no! I must go make space quickly! *Kiama runs around her room desperately trying to give all her decks space... It doesn't work, and she gives up.

Ah well. Although I do have a tiny bit more space now, after my 48th deck, cuz the drawer I keep all my decks in is so weighted down, that the bottom of it has bent under the weight, which give me a bit extra room to squeeze one more deck in!

Re: Tarot of the Orishas

This deck can be used like the traditional tarot, but by someone in the religion who has knowledge of the Orishas and their elements. I'm in the Religion Santeria, but I chose not to use this deck. However, my godmother uses it and she is one of the most sought after readers here in Miami. They really speak to her!

Zhritza  18 Apr 2002
I think storing them horizontally is safer than vertically. If they're putting weight on each other, at least it's an even weight; it would only wear them out over time if, for example, you pushed down really hard on the top one in a stack and rubbed it really fast against the next one down. :) Chafing is worrisome, but that would be hard to do, anyway...

Riversea  09 May 2002
For years, the only Tarot deck in our house was the original issue Vertigo deck, purchased because of our love of Gaiman's Sandman comics and Mckean's artwork. A beautiful, loved deck, but not a beginner's deck.

A couple of years ago, it was joined by the Lord of the Rings Tarot. A birthday present from my husband. Again, not the deck I felt I could learn on.

Since last Sunday, a mere four days ago, those two have been joined by a Universal Waite ( I decided I wanted to start really learning Tarot- the Vertigo and LofR weren't that friendly to a novice), a Victoria Regina (the price was good!), and tonight, my out-of-town husband informs me, a Thoth is coming to live with us!

Can anybody explain this odd multiplication of decks to me? ;)

And once I've worked through the UW, I want a St. Petersberg, a World Spirit, an Olde English, a Halloween, the reissue of the Vertigo (so I don't hurt the original deck), a Napo...

~Repeating over and over in my head... I am NOT collecting Tarot decks, I am NOT collecting Tarot decks, I am collecting Tarot decks, I am collecting Tarot decks... :)~

You all are a very bad influence on my poor bank account!

And Liliana, the Thoth deck is your fault! LOL! I mentioned to my husband that you had said that there was nothing sexier than a man doing a reading with a big Thoth... Bam! A couple of days later, he buys one.

I asked him how much that played into his decision to buy it, and he said about 60%. ;) That, and something Thirteen said about the Lovers card in the Basics section.

Sheesh! And I've only been reading this site for a few weeks... how many decks will we have a month from now?

I would like to say, you've all been great! I've learned so much in just the few weeks I've been prowling around here. The depth of knowledge and love of learning here is stunning and wonderful. So, thank you! :)

wavebreaker  09 May 2002
I know what you mean Riversea... I've only been here a few weeks myself, and now I'm really addicted... ;)

I only had the Rider-Waite when I joined this forum. By now, I've ordered the Old English, the Glastonbury and the Rock & Roll Tarot. And my wish list keeps growing (six decks on it when I last counted...).

I'll be going to a psychic fair on Saturday, I know they sell tarot decks, so I already know what's going to happen... ;)

Kiama  09 May 2002
This forum is just a deck collector's haven! Or, if you're not a deck collector, you soon will be!

I came to these boards with about 4 decks. Here I am now, with an updated number or 50 decks! I also have 6 more on their way...

*Sigh* Maybe we should get these breeding decks neutered or something?

Kiama

VGimlet  09 May 2002
I think neutering might not be a bad idea. I just counted up the decks I've bought in the last five months - since December, when I had the thought..."Wow, there are a lot of cool tarot decks out now. Hmmm, maybe I should go online and see if there are any websites about tarot....." :D

I had three decks when I came here. Now...26, with two more on the way. And a list of 13 more that I'd like right here on a Post-it by the computer. And an even bigger list in the back of my journal.
True, some of them I bought used - and I've had good luck, only two decks that had a strange vibe to them.

I too, am starting to look at alternative storage ideas. My tarot drawer only has room for 3 more decks.

And thank god for that! ;) At least here I can talk ecstatically about the latest deck I've seen or ordered. When I try that with my friends, they just look at me with this tired look, as if to say, "o no, not her again with her tarot decks..." ;)

dolphingirl  09 May 2002
Hi Everyone

Well I just got the brilliant idea to take a photograph of all my decks layed out . It was a super idea but now the kitchen table is covered in cecks and I still have about 40 more decks to go, AND I can't get far enough away to get them all in one shot. I think I may have to contact NASA and have them use a satalite :)

Sam

wavebreaker  09 May 2002
LOL!!

Sounds like a new game show: spot the tarot addict on this satellite photo...
Nah, that's probably too easy... :D

You know I even get that from some of my tarot friends who live by me. They don't think you should have more decks than you actually use!!!! Now How Boring Is That????
I love this forum! LOL I can talk about each and every deck I can think about and there is always at least one other person (jewel, truthsayer.... :D ) who wants or has more decks than I do!!!!! :* :* :*

I think I need to apologise here and now to Malachite! He must get so bored with me when I'm on the phone to him, cuz one of my fave topics of conversation is the decks I just got, the decks I am gonna get, the decks I want, and the decks I hate.... I really feel sorry for him having to listen to all that! Here is the only place I can really get excited about the new decks I get, cuz people here understand...

(Just got my 51st deck, by the way!)

Kiama

Zhritza  11 May 2002
I counted them the other day, and I had hit 30. Now, of course, I have 31... (heck, I had to get the Russian of St. Petersburg sometime...)
