My step-daughter has been diligently reading my copy of 'tarot for a New generation" without the benefit of a deck to review with. I'd told her to read the book for a bit and see if she thought it was something she wanted to pursue before I bought her own deck.
She told me earlier in the week she wanted her own deck, she thinks she'd like to pursue Tarot studies. So I'd been thinking about a deck suitable for an almost 13 y.o. girl, and reading threads here about that same subject.
Yesterday, we all went to the annual Busker Fest (buskers from around the world come up to the pedestrian mall and do their thing - great fun and cheap entertainment, too!) and we went up to the local New Age bookstore in the Byward Market. They had "Tarot of a Moon Garden" and I had R. look through the demo - she fell in love with it, as I knew she would!. While she had browsed through the Whimsical, I was concerned that at 12.5, she'd "outgrow" it soon.
So she is now the proud owner of her first deck, the Moon Garden one.
While there, I browsed through the "Tarot of the Trance" which I have bene drawn too ever since I saw it posted here. So vivid! I'm a littl e concerned about the pips, but if you look closely, there are little illustrations embedded in it...I suppose to assist with the "light trance state" the author suggests you use to read with thsi deck.
Anyone have either of these decks and have any insights you'd like to share?
BTW, I suggested to R. that she might want to start coming here to get some help when she starts to do simple readings. I'll try to give everyone a heads up if/when she does.

Hi. I have both of these decks & I really like them both. The Moon Garden is not as fluff as you would think. I've had it for a long time & the pictures are perfect for a young person, but there is a lot of 'serious' Tarot symbols in there, too- enough to keep a young lady busy for awhile. I don't think she will outgrow it anytime soon. (However, she might become a collector and want more decks! lol)
I love my Tarot of the Trance, too, but right now it sits proudly on my collection shelf unused. I love the artwork but I've been really adding to my collection lately & being more of a Traditionalist when it comes to Tarot, I've been concentrating on my other new decks. For me personally, Trance will remain in my collection as a valued 'art' deck, but I don't know if I will use it right now.
Hope this helps!

Hi Amyel
I have the tarot of the moongarden and like Midnightmerry already said theres more than meets the eye. Somewhere there is a thread about it ( from when i bought it) and some people have given alot of good advise and suggestions.
I friend of mine has recently started learning the cards and her deck of choice was also the the moongarden. For her its working out perfectly!
For me some of the pip cards looked the same at first. But after carefull study of the images i found the traditional RW meanings.
I hope your sep doughter enjoy's this deck and i think your a real cool mun for getting here a tarot deck :)
Love and Light

I did have a look through the Moon Garden book (I bought R. the set with the 156 pg book, not just the deck with the LWB) and explained that for now, I thought R. should use the "Tarot for a New Generation" book I've lent her. The book in the set used a more advanced language then I think R. can comprehend for now, although I am sure she will grow into it. I think she's quite happy with this arrangement!

"Tarot For A New Generation" is a good book, especially for a beginner.
I'm sure she'll do just fine with it & her Moon Garden Tarot deck.

Tarot for a New Generation is an excellent book! I just read through it and it gave me so many insights. I think you picked the right one for her to start with. I loved it.
I'm also glad to hear that Moon Garden isn't all fluff. It looks so pretty and sugary. I just won a copy on eBay and now I'm looking forward to getting it even more (if that's possible).
