How different are the meanings on the swords and wands compared to the common meanings. I know that the elements are switched so there is a difference, but the 9 and 10 of swords are still the same, and several others are the same also. Also, how are they different, because the 5 of swords in my deck is not the same as the 5 of wands in a Rider Waite deck. Ok, thanks in advance.

Hi,
I happen to have this deck too.....
I'm really new at this, so can't say that my views are accurate but this is how i view them......
First impreseion: When i look at the cards, both show sadness and unhappiness. But i feel that the 9th of swords is more of despair, sadness, regret, because of something that has been done wrong in the past. Notice that the man is holding his head in his hands......maybe he made a wrong decision? leading to his current situation??
The 10th of swords to me does not show sadness.....the woman is a warrior as explained in the book. To me, it is a battle lost even though she did her best. Erm...something like "losing the battle but not the war".
I think the two stories in the book bring out totally different images of how the characters have landed up in their situstion.
9th Swords: I would say that the situation is bleak because of something that the inquirer did and perhaps now regrets. It is a card that represents sadness and loss at the present time. 9s however indicate the completion of events and so i would take this to mean that this time of sadness is reaching the end of the cycle. Would advise the inquirer to move on as there are other things worth looking foward to ( as represented by the colours of the sunset).
10th Swords: Would say that it represents failure to achieve something despite trying one's best. Because of this, the impact of faiilure is deeper than that of the 9th of swords (he made a wrong decision). There is no sunset here so no there is no way to "move on" as the "light" is something that is not apparent. Because the fight is over, the climax has been reached and so things can't get worse than this. U can say that he is at the bottom of the bottomless pit. The tough thing to do now is to climb out of that pit. Hope is not represented in the form of the sunset, but of the ancient stones. the foundation of one's beliefs. 10s indicate new beginnings and changes. So i would take it to mean that things will get better from this point onwards, but the inquirer needs to really use all he has to stand up again.
Umm.........well that what i feel at least when i look at the cards.....hope they help and won't make u even more confused.
BTW.....i was a little confused at first, but i realized that although Conway links swords to fire and Wands to Air, the meanings of 9th of swords still corresponds to the 9th of swords in other decks.

That's one thing I've noticed about the few fire/swords, wands/air decks that I have (including my beloved Nigel Jackson). The meanings stay relatively the same as the RWS deck despite the switching of the elements. So I guess it doesn't really make that big a difference in the reading. So why is it such a big deal? Elemental dignities perhaps?

I also hsd noticed the same thing as Keslynn; meanikngs same despite element change - I had not noticed the Nigel had the fire/sword ; air/wand change.... I have to look more closely -
Does the Celtic Dragon have this change too?

I Think it should make a very big difference when the elements are changed around. Think about the aces! The ace of wands to me represents the firy burst of energy. I wonder if the meanings of the aces are also the same in those decks because to me it would definitely make a difference in a reading. Or at least it would force me to look at the aces in a different perspective.

I used the Witches' Tarot for a long time, and didn't notice any huge changes in meanings due to the elemental switch. She did change some of the Major associations with the Kabala though. Since this is getting a wee bit off the topic of Celtic Dragon tarot, I think I'd like to start a new thread on this.
To make it slightly on topic, I like the art of Celtic Dragon tarot. But I'm not drawn to the deck because it doesn't seem to have the traditional symbolism so much, and I really perfer traditional symbolism. :)

Well....personally i like the deck....but i think whether the deck connects to u or not depends on the individual. Wat suits others may not necessarily suit u :P

Check out the 7 of cups for the Celtic Dragon tarot. the dragon holding on to the side of the cup is quite telling. the fact that in this card we are looking twords the youth changes the persepective of the card in a way that makes us feel like we are part of one of the decisions being made

I LOVE this deck !!!
I've gotten and continue to get very accurate readings with it.
I like to have a few decks that have the traditional meanings
of the cards, but I also like to have a few decks that diverge a little from the traditional meaning. Divergent decks can be very
useful if a situation or reading warrant further clarification or
if your looking for a different aspect of the reading.
Just my 2 cents worth !

I too have this deck, although I just got it recently and have been studying it like mad. So far, I haven't seen how the meanings of the swords and wands vary personally. Then again, I've always associated swords with fire, wands with air, pentacles with earth, and cups with water. I ended up giving the H-R deck my own interpratations. My two cents. smiles.

Does anyone know of a place where I can buy the Celtic Dragon Tarot Book, without buying the deck of cards. I already have the deck, but I'm a n00b at reading tarot and I need the book to help me understand. Thanks a bunch in advance for any help!!

You might try www.amazon.com ... sometimes you can get used deck books from sets without the decks. Just type Celtic Dragon tarot in the search field, go into used items and read the descriptions, some will say book only if they have any. You might also luck into it at a half-price book store. Good luck!
Ohhh and another book I would recommend that goes nicely with this deck although it is not a tarot book, is Dancing With Dragons by DJ Conway also. It really helps you understand the meanings of the dragons in this deck.

Think I would have to say 7 of cups from the celtic dragon tarot. Head in the clouds, a dreamer/thinker, so many things going on and nothing getting finished.
Lets see, I still haven't finished a scrap book for my mom that was suppose to be a xmas gift from two years ago, much less a cross stitching project that was suppose to be my hubby's xmas gift 4 yrs ago, my "mother's book" (instead of a baby's book, it's a scrap book that I put together myself), and TONS AND TONS of pictures that I have yet to put in a photo album (in which I have like 3 of them laying around waiting to be filled), and that's just to name a few projects, there's many more laying around here. Did I forget to mention that I'm also a procrastenator? My house is always turned upside down with the help of my three children and hubby, constantly I'm running out the door to go do this and that and usually leave about half of what I need with me behind (often my wallet!). My head is NEVER together, very forgetful, and rarely ever can I finish something I started no matter how motivated I am. Shrugs with a smile, what can I say?

Happiness is ....
I just absolutely ADORE this deck. Unwrapping it and looking through it, it felt like meeting my first born. It is so warm and comfortable ... It felt like I was holding a tender dragon hatchling in my hands. There was a real energy sync with this deck.
There is so much emotion in this deck and it feels so intuitive. I could hear every dragon voice, from the large ones to the babies, each unique and felt a part of each scene.
I rather like the fire element for swords. Seems fitting for dragons really.
I don't like the book though and had no choice in the matter as it was only sold as a set. The meanings in the book just don't fit for me.

The Bex Person says new to tarot. I would not suggest this particular companion book at all. I would suggest a good beginner all purpose Tarot Book instead and maybe a book on Celtic Mythology that includes a section on Dragon Lore. But I find a white dragon emerging from the old shedded black dragon skin in the Death card (which is utterly profound and beautiful by the way, how can you not know what this card means) to the red dragons of swords, to the green dragons of the pentacles, plus every card is so well done to convey the meanings, really speaks so well on its own :)

I think the book does in a way provide some infomation on the cards. At least one can see it in a different light. As u mentioned, I also think the pictures really speak for themselves so in a way not having the book is not that important :) but there is no harm in reading the book. I started with the book first, then i bought another book just to further clarify some of the cards which can be confusing.

I have to edit my post! I just had a profound enlightenment. There is a reason I have to have my Celtic Dragon book right now. Hard to explain. I have a dragon in with me and it feels like an infant . It would explain the energy exchange I felt when I held this deck for the first time. All the pieces are coming together. I need this book, not for the tarot explainations but for the extra information that comes with it.
My original post:
No harm in reading the book first at my end either :)
That is how I decided I didn't need it :) I guess the cards spoke to me enough. It is such an intuitive deck *S*
With my first deck, it came as a set and it was the only book I had to begin tarot and I found it invaluable!
Funny thing with tarot is that everyone has this neat relationship with their deck and many times the meanings they associate with the cards are not always the same as the others. True that if someone had this deck as their first deck, I would want the book too. But I found the meanings a little too short. I guess that is just me. I've saved the book at any rate. Not to many deck companion books have meditations and candle spells so it is not completely worthless :)

Haha...okie so looks like The BexPerson wun be getting it after all. When I first got this deck (my first and only deck) i was quite puzzled by the book too. Found it a bit confusing and a little too profound for me. Thats why i went to buy a book on Tarot in general. After i read that book and came back to the CD one, I found that a lot of things in it were in a way a deeper explanation to the original meaning of Tarot decks. Though i still prefer to read the general book on Tarot to learn the meanings, I think the CD book allows me to develop a different perspective towards the cards. That's why i LOVE this deck soooo much. Because you can just connect with it :P
