Rohrig 2 of Cups

I bought the Rohrig a couple of days ago - it's beautiful!
I might actually be able to work with it, too, which I wasn't really expecting.
So far, I've just been looking at the cards....and looking..... and looking......

I'm puzzled by the 2 of cups: I really love this card, but I am unable to find even *one* cup in the picture. All the other cards have the appropriate number of suit-symbols in them, although it took me a while to find all of them, but here I just can't see it.
I've tried holding it upside-down, sideways, close to my eyes, at arm's length; nothing. NOt a single cup.

Has anyone who owns this deck ever found those cups?

Hi Hedera! Welcome to the ranks of the lovers of the Röhrig Tarot! (A very exclusive club, of course... ;) )

The Röhrig Tarot is definitely my favorite Tarot deck. Just thought I'd mention that... As for the 2 of Cups... no, I've never found any images of 2 cups in that card either. However, the card is not devoid of water symbolism. The fan coral in the background represents this element very well. The 2 people, one clearly shown and the other hinted at, to me represent the 2 vessels for the emotions.

There is one other thing which I find very unusual and fascinating though. Take a close look at the woman in the image... she is being held by another person, whose shoulder can be seen, right? However, have you noticed how many hands are on her back? Apparently the person holding her has 3 hands! Or, is one of them her own arm which wraps around herself? Is there another person there who we can not see, other than his/her hand?

Okay... who has the Röhrig book? What does the book say about this card? Hmmmmm?

[edited to correct spelling :p ]

Hi Hedera and Trogon,

The book doesn't really tell you too much about the Minors, infact for the Two of Cups all it says is ' Encounter with love, harmonious partnership' - and thats it lol. I'd also wondered where the cups were, but I did think that the womans hair looks alot like pouring water, with the swirls in it. :) I'd also wondered about the hands, if you look at the pair on the womans side they are both right hands, no thumbs showing, maybe lol :)

Hi Hedera and Trogon & Emily,

My husband and I looked and looked for the cups...not there. Agree, the hair looks like it has water "symbols"....but can we explore the hands more???? What are your ideas, on the hands??? Would love to hear....

I did nearly add yesterday that the two right hands looked female, thin fingers, slim hands and the other looks like a male hand. :)

Hi, I'm shower

I just recieved this deck and am exploring it too. I was taken by the 3 hands on this card. I think the card itself is beautiful, and certainly makes me think of love. Thinking about "why the 3 arms" I was brought to thoughts of the Marseilles deck and the three figures there. The man and two women, the third being thought of as either the mother or temptress. I thought of the Cosmic Tribe deck and the three Lover's cards. The three arms take what at first glance looks like a beautiful moment between two people, a typical couple and add a alternate element. Making me think of what could the third arm represent. Some other type of love. The artist seems to want me to think of all the ways love can come. Self love, gay love, love between a mother and child, love between friends. The only part of the other body being the shoulder reminds me of "a shoulder to lean on", the third arm saying that shoulder could come from a number of places.

Hi Shower and welcome to the Forums!

You have some very interesting thoughts on this card. I hadn't really connected the 3 arms to the varying "types" of love one can experience and share. I like that! The shoulder to lean on is one thing that had occured to me, sort of, though I had thought more of a "shoulder to cry on". To me, this card, given the image and keyword, are about experiencing these different kinds of love and feelings as opposed to just thinking about, or dreaming about them. What do y'all think?

Your mentioning the possibility of "gay love" also made me think of another card... but I guess that discussion would best be a new thread... :D ;)

add: Here's the new thread; http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12513

Could it mean that we must first wrap our own arms around ourselves, love ourselves completely to fully experience the true love of another?

In the "2" we are learning to do this, grasp the duality of it all, understanding the High Priestess's wisdom....only beginning to be on our way, so 3 instead of 2 or 4 arms.

Any thoughts?
