Chris Paradis' Rock 'n Roll Tarot: Is there eventually going to be a third edition?

I'm sorry I missed getting either of the earlier editions.

I didn't een know there was a "Rock 'n' Roll" Tarot....can you give me more info?

wavebreaker  08 Feb 2004
Hi c0de,

You can find more info about the Rock & Roll Tarot here and on Chris Paradis' own website.

There have been two limited editions; the website says nothing about a new edition.

There's a good thread on the deck over here: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3210&highlight=Rock+N+Roll+tarot

I wish he WOULD put out a third edition, there were only 500 decks in the first and the second. I know he was miffed that a lot of them were broken up & sold by individual cards on ebay. Putting out a large printing may get rid of the problem or make it worse, hard to say. I doubt it would be a deck carried by US Games or Llewellyn though, I don't think he got permission from the artists or the various estates to 'officially' do the deck with their images on them (or acquired an ok from the publishers of the songs to have snippets on the cards). Legal problems with copyright & rights--not something the card publishers want to touch right now.

Nice deck though!

Curiously enough, the official website for Cyndi Lauper has a scan of the Rock 'N Roll Tarot card for Cyndi Lauper. :)

Some of the poeple or their family may have a problem with the deck.--Tao

Any updates on the possibility (yes or no) of a third edition?

Considering that people rip the deck apart and sell them individually on Ebay...why would he want too. That's just mean, sad and greedy...

I agree it was mean and greedy to rip a deck apart and sell individual cards on ebay. Especially since a tarot deck is supposed to be considered as an entity in itself, rather than just 78 individual pieces of artwork packaged together.

Even so, though, I'd love to get my hands on one of these decks! It just looks like so much fun. I wish he'd put out a third edition, because I would deffinately buy one. I love quirky decks like that.

I've seen the same thing done with antique maps and with antique botanical prints, probably as a way of getting a larger effective total selling price. Antiquarian dealers buy antique atlases and botanical prints books and rip them apart and sell the maps and prints individually.

Is there any way of us convincing Chris Paradis to make a third edition? :) I want one and don't want to pay the outrageous prices on eBay for the second edition or, heaven forbid, the first edition.

Admittedly it's been a while since I've been in contact with Mr. Paradis, but as of my last round of exchanges with him, he had stated there would be no third edition. From what I can tell, when copies appear on eBay, they're being sold by the artist as often as not. He apparently kept a small supply back -- can't say that I blame him. If other folks are commanding big prices for the deck on the secondary market, why not the artist?

As for "new" releases, he seems to have moved onto other projects, such as his Circus & Sideshow Tarot.

And as for the decks that were sold card-by-card on eBay: as a tarot collector, that practice does rankle me personally (although pragmatically, I can't truly say there's really anything wrong with it). However, as for the reports that the artist was upset by it: maybe. But that contradicts something he wrote to me earlier. Here's quoting from an email I received from him back in November of 2001 (yes, I'm way too anal; I keep almost all my business-related correspondence):

"I gave out single cards from one rough set to share with people around here a year ago - still have a few left...I decided to Go ahead and split up one more deck I am selling those sparseley [sic] on ebay.... that was after much thought and after a lady cursed me out for not wanting to sell her the Elvis card.... then I thought it was rather silly to NOt sell her a single card - folks are crazy about musical artists.."

I still find it ironic that when the first edition came out and we stocked them, we couldn't move them to save our lives... they sat on the shelf for months on end. Now, the deck is the #1-requested item through our search service, although I'll never be able to fulfill almost all of them, since the price caps placed on those requests are mostly way, way below current market value.

Do I dare ask how much a deck would be??

And does anyone actually read with it, or is it really more a collector piece?

I read with my 2nd edition sometimes. It's one of those decks that I "got" right away - and it would be a shame to never read with it, I think.

I found Aeclectic shortly after the 1st edition sold out, and it was on the top of my wishlist. I finally found a copy of the 1st edition right before the announcement of the 2nd. What I paid then seemed like a lot (I think it was about 130.00 - the most I'd paid for a deck up to that point :D) so I decided to get a 2nd edition to read with.

Right now there is one on ebay starting at $199...reserve not met.

I got mine for $200. 2nd edition. It is my favorite deck, and I do use it sometimes.
