Decks you just can't get rid of...

Is there a deck that you hate so much you want to get rid of, but hold on to it because you think it might hold *some* reasonable worth later on?

Mine is the Tarot Nova. Goddess, I hate this deck. I even posted a post on Tarot Trading trying to get rid of it and no one would take it. Last night I even thumbed through the cards, trying to see if I could understand the artist a little more, and though some cards are "Yeah, I can see that...that's an interesting interpretation of it." I just hate this deck. I don't like the card stock, it's too heavy, they're impossible to shuffle. The plastic coating on the cards doesn't even allow me to sideways shuffle them. And the artwork....oh my gosh....

Anyone had this experience?

fairyhedgehog  24 Apr 2004
Not quite the same, but I stored my Mythic Tarot with a small box of soap for fragrance, and the backs of some of the cards have been scratched. I'm ready to trade it on now, but no one wants a damaged deck.

I'm sorry you hate the Tarot Nova so much, I find it a fun little deck. Maybe you'll find some takers if you have another go at trading it.

hehe, great subject.
I do indeed have decks I just can't get rid of how hard I try.
No one wants my native american deck or the santa fe deck or the tapestry tarot. they are just too ugly!
I never ever use them or even look at them but keep them in case I sometime find someone who might like them.

Well, I don't think it will have any value later (!), but I bought a small Osho Zen in Czech because I wanted to see the artwork. In fact, I don't really care for it (sorry, Osho fans) but can I trade this deck on? No way! Not for anything. I guess the fact it's in Czech is not exactly attractive!

Ah well, it will have to sit in a drawer here and grow old gracefully...

Marion  24 Apr 2004
Have faith people! I had my Sulamith Wulfing Angel Oracle deck for ages. I tried to trade it several times. (I just have never gotten the hang of oracle dcks). Truly it is a lovely deck, graceful and charming and in perfect condition. Not even a nibble, any time I posted in Trading. Then out of the blue Kissa asked me to trade it for a brand new Jodo-Camoin. I am happy and I trust that she is.
baba, maybe some day someone will actually want your OZ in Czech. :D
ps... the Star cards are "still" available. :D :D

Actually, I'm surprised that the Czech OZT isn't trade-attractive. (It may be a case of what deck you want in exchange for it.) Quite a few people on various tarot discussion lists have said they like the OZT card images but not the presence of keywords and have even gone to the point of snipping off the keywords with scissors. If one does not know Czech, keywords in that language are a viable alternative to deck-snipping.

Me too! I have many decks for sale/trade listed in my post on Tarot Trading but basically no interest. And I am not planning to give away the decks. I guess it's a case of my wish list not matching what a person would be wishing to trade in exchange for one of my decks. Trading is preferable to selling, in that both sides don't take a loss (other than mailing costs, which can be prohibitive sometimes).

The irony is that when I list for a trade, I frequently end up acquiring more decks and not getting rid of the mine!

Osher  24 Apr 2004
I have my Garden of Priapos. It's ugly and er, not suitable for most readings shall we say (as well as being difficult to read with). I should chose a different path from this deck. I should... but I know I will not!

LOL! Drat! I am very interested in Sulamith Wulfing. Odd and interesting work. Ah well, too late now.

Also the Osho. Well yes, I don't really want anything much for it (it is only the small version) but no-one seemed interested. I thought the same as you, that the Czech keywords might be less distracting.

I've never actually advertised it for trade though, just offered it a few times in response to trades. Maybe if I do a general clear-out I'll include it.

ncefafn  24 Apr 2004
No one wants a Barbara Walker Tarot, and I can't say that I blame them. I've been trying to offload that ugly thing for ages.

I just can't no matter how much I try, I can't appreciate the Russian tarot of St Petersburg. Also, when I purchased the Zerner Farber online, I didn't realize they were small cards, which made the artwork and images too busy and hard to focus on the symbolism....however, I keep convincing myself that I may get to like them in the future, and can't get rid of them.

Kissa came to my rescue too. I managed to offload my World Spirit for a Camoin.

I have also tried to trade my Celtic Dragon several times but no takers. Its a deck which I never liked from the moment I bought it but alas no one else seems to like it either

Aure  24 Apr 2004
I hate my two Thoths. Atleast for the time being I do. I just don't want to get rid of them. Maybe it is because they are part of my collection or maybe I still think some day I might miss them.

Cocobird55  24 Apr 2004
The Robin Wood.

I don't quite hate it, but I don't like it much, either.

I bought it because so many people liked it, so I thought I might be missing something.

Then I bought the book, too, because I thought that if I read the book, it might help me with the deck. I haven't read it yet, though...

I'm keeping them, because I still hope that someday I'll look through the book and the deck and enjoy them. However, I have the deck stored in a wooden box (that was a gift) that I don't like either.

Looking this over, it definitely sounds goofy, but that's me I guess.

Marion  24 Apr 2004
Aure, kryztyna really wants a Thoth and she might trade you one of her hand-made bags for it. (maybe, I can't speak for her of course)

Silverlotus  25 Apr 2004
I hung on to the Faery Wicca Tarot even though I didn't like it. Some one here was kind enough to send it to me for no cost, so I felt bad letting it go. So, one day I stuck a post it note on it with the URL for the forum and set it loose on the subway. I wonder if anyone kept it, or if it ended up in the TTC's giant Lost and Found.

Marion  25 Apr 2004
Silverlotus, now there's an idea for finding a new home for a deck. And even if it went to Lost and Found, it still might find a new home eventually.

Silverlotus  25 Apr 2004
I got the idea from Bookcrossing. :)

Chronata  25 Apr 2004
I hope someday to unload the God awful (or maybe it should be Goddess awful?) Tarot of Wicca...
I have tried trading it...but no one wants the thing.
I hang onto it because maybe I can someday trade it for an ugly deck that I will actually read with!
Stranger things have happened!

Hi jema,

[delurking] . . hi Jema, i just wanted to chime in that i really enjoy the Santa Fe tarot. Perhaps the fact that I grew up near Santa Fe between two indian reservations might have something to do with it :) - however, the art and icons strike me as the most authentic of all of the native american tarot's. The simplistic and geometric drawings evoke Katchina dolls. Too bad I didn't know that you were trying to ditch your copy of the deck before I purchased mine. ;) [/lurking]

hedgecub  26 Apr 2004
Can't get rid of my Lord of the Rings tarot. It was my first deck; I bought it because I was hoping to be able to relate to it, being a fantasy novel fan. Only after I got a few more decks did I realize just how horrible the LotR deck is to read with. *groan*

Ah well, I use it to play the game that's supposed to go with it.

dolphingirl  26 Apr 2004
LOL i have had fun reading this thread as there are alot of decks here that while not my favorite would still be neat to see.

I actually kind of feel sory for alot of the decks that people don't seem to like and I tend to try to give them a chance. Like the Royal is one that I don't think anyone likes but I think it kind of cute.

Hummmm there are a few decks I just can't seem to get rid of though.

I bought extras of both the Borders and the Barnes and Nobel (desinty tarot) cheep decks that I picked up for trade and or gifts and everyone either isn't interrested in them or already has them. I would use them more to give to people just starting out but with non illustrated pips I think there alittle hard for a beginner.

crystal cove  27 Apr 2004
I have some decks I'd love to get rid of, but it's not because I can't part with them. No one wants them. :D I'd love to unload my World Spirit, Spiral, Tarot of the Sephiroth, Vision Quest, and Light and Shadow.

Compounding the problem is the fact that there isn't that many decks that I want, at the moment, and I'm not sure I want to get into the hassle of collecting money.

Jewel  27 Apr 2004
~wonders if Kissa might come to her rescue and take her tarot of the Cloisters for a Camoin~ *LOL*

There are only two decks that as soon as I got them I realized they had to go away, but I was very lucky as they apparently did not want to stay either *LOL* ... it was the Victoria Regina, which went to a dear friend that lives near the author and got it signed :), the other was the Bosch.

The Voyager, which I also hate, really wants to come home with me (stalking me actually). I have been fighting it for over 2 years, and I am still winning. If I could get a restraining order against it I would *LOL*.

dolphingirl  27 Apr 2004
I bought the voyager as halloween present for myself one year, and to me those cards looked like someone put 5 photo tarot decks in a blender then took them out and glued them back on card stock then put those cards in a kaleidoscope lol. I know there are people that love to read with this deck but it just feels like sensory overload to me :)

Khatruman  27 Apr 2004
Arggghhh, I am really trying to whittle down my collection so that I can concentrate more meaningfully on the decks I have. I set myself a goal to put one more deck up for sale each week. I managed to sell a few of my decks (that got good homes), and I have now reached a point where I cannot part with any more decks. Grrrrrrr.

In fact, some of the reasoning is not purely that I will use them, some of them I am not parting with because I haven't worked with them, and they are ones I fought hard for: i.e. the Bosch, the Leonardo da Vinci, or the New Vision. sighs.. I may have to be more viscious...

Bravo!! that was the description I could not verbalize. That is exactly how I view the deck. So tell me, do you still have the deck, or did it go away? It has at least vacated the premises of the 1/2 priced books I go to, so it cannot stalk me as badly now. But with the forum as my witness I will NEVER purchase that deck, no matter how much it nags.

Hey Khatruman, if you have to get rid of two more that you have not worked with I can recommend getting rid of the Bosh and the New Vision ... I do not have the DaVinci so I will not speak to that one.

That's funny, I've also had trouble trying to offload a Barbara Walker. After disliking the deck for so long I've warmed up to it again and now it's the deck I use when i want information from the Dark Goddess. I guess it wasn't meant to leave. The tarot of the Old Path I just can't seem to get rid of though try as I might.

Here, here! I too have this problem. There are quite a few decks I would like to offload but not many I want in return. This is a delemna.

I have no idea why im holding on to my "Black Tarot" (royo) because I HATE decks with blank pip cards and while its beautiful.. it doesnt serve a full purpose if I cant read the whole deck.. I would have been happier if it had been Major Arcana only.. *rolls eyes* but thats the end of my rant.. Im holding onto it .. I guess because the artwork is beautiful.
