Just bragging!

Apparently I may be the first person outside of Prague to see the reprint. I havn't had a really good chance to have a look at it yet but what I can tell you is the cards are slightly larger that the limited edition. The backs are the same design but blue which I prefer and the Prudence card is beautiful. I hope to have a really good look at it over the weekend and will let you know how I get on.

WHAT WHAT WHAT????

1) what is the limited edition you are talking about???

2) what is the Prudence card? I know Karen talked about redoing the Temperance card... is it now renamed as well?

Oh Jewel_ry, you have me drowling all over the keyboard...

Reprint? Revision? New Prudence card? Please explain more about the reprint deck.--Tao

Jewel-ry  24 Jun 2004
Kissa,

Dont panic!!!

The limited edition was the original deck. The reprint has Prudence. Karen had a few reprint decks going without the lwb, see this thread

http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27477&perpage=10&pagenumber=1

and so, I ordered one and it arrived.

Now, please do try and calm down :D

Jewel-ry what Death card is used?

baba-prague  24 Jun 2004
No, we haven't really said much as we are just a bit too busy to take orders yet - although some are somewhere on the Atlantic heading for the US.

Here is the Prudence card:

I promise I will say more properly once we get a breather next week!

Oh - and we are out of the decks without LWB I'm afraid. We only had a very few so it was just a "thank-you" really to offer them here first. But we have lots of the ordinary decks WITH LWB of course.

Jewel-ry, stop watching football and start test-driving your new deck. I think I read somewhere it is a card stock that can take more shuffling than the limited edition ?
May be a reason to get another one, once I start using it "for real".

I have been comparing my first edition T of P to the reprint. I prefer the reprint. The cards in the reprint are a teeny bit larger, about 1/8 inch.

What I really noticed is that there is more detail in the reprint edition. This is mostly in the lighter sections of the cards. In the 2 of Pentacles in the first edition, the building and the river behind the figure are very light. In the reprint, the building is darker and the river is especially darker. It's not that the reprint has a dark look. It is more that the light areas have more detail filled in. Another example is the Page of Pentacles. There is a cabinet door behind him. In the first edition this door is very light. In the reprint you can see the details in the wood in the door. Some cards look darker overall, especially cards that were rather light. The 7 of Pentacles in the reprint looks more detailed and richer than in the first edition.

One card that is really different is the Knight of Cups. The knight and horse in the reprint are now smooth shades of blue. In the first edition, these figures were yellow and purple. I find the card in the reprint to be less jarring than the card in the first edition.

The Prudence card is a 79th card. I think she replaces the extra Death card. The Death card used is the one with the skeleton and the pile of bodies.

Anyway, I prefer the way the cards look in the reprint. That is saying a lot because I LOVE my first edition deck. Congrats to baba-prague for taking a gorgeous deck and making it even better!

I did a card by card comparison of the two decks, just to get started. A lot of fiddling with colour saturation and that kind of thing. The effect on The Hanged Man was the most startling. Yes, I realize it was only a small change, but he looks less like a statue and more like a real person now. You get more of that sense of palpably 'pausing' with it. Certainly the effects of the tone and saturation of colour enhanced several cards, The Hermit comes to mind. In others I cannot say that I noted a huge impact, though I could see the differences.

I really only noted a couple of small detail changes (vans taken out of background and some building changes on the 2 of coins and people added on bridge in 2 of cups) but the one that really startled me was the Knight of cups. Tell you the truth I am of two minds on the changes to that card. I don't miss the tongue on the horse, it kind of made the horse look dead. I had read baba’s posts on the subject of that very unusual statue. The removal of the shiny bronze from both horse legs and man makes for some interesting change in the tone of the card. As I suppose was intended. The effect for me is to make the Knight look older and more serious. And also very much like a statue. The shiny knight looks younger, more rakish (maybe with that little moustache highlighted) and also sort of almost alive. In a way. Dunno. The effects have changed the image so much I hardly know what to say about it. Certainly you get that sense of a person out of touch with reality in both of them. The new card though looks like he has been staring into that cup too long and lost his shine.

The deck as a whole. Well, I really like that card stock. That is the easiest deck to shuffle of all my decks. And the cards do feel as if you could bend them a bit without any damage. The first deck does have (not really badly mind you) the feeling that it would be too easy to put an irreparable bend/break in one of the cards. The varnish is also very nice to touch and gives a good feeling about durability.

So, the big test is in the using, right? As it happens, I had promised a reading to one of our AT comrades and so I used the 2nd edition ToP for that. The cards almost selected themselves. It is a very lively deck to use, good energetic vibes. As always I find it an excellent reading deck.

That grey-blue on the new backs is very attractive. Fully reversible of course, for those days on which a person does reversals. All in all do not have any doubts about this deck. Whether it has a different energy, I am not sure. About all I could say is that it seems to have a slightly higher energy level. I see she chose the same Death card that I did originally. I kept the original Temperance in the deck and carefully (so no damage) put Prudence up on display.

My reprint decks arrived a couple of days ago. They are priced so competatively that I indulged in two copies - one for use, one for spare!

Apart from anything else, I didn't want to tarnish my precious first edition by over use!

I love the new Prudence card and my favourite Death card - the grizzly one! - is used in favour of the rider on horseback. The cardstock is more durable this time and there have been subtle improvements in terms of colour balancing.

All I can say is money really well spent!

The color saturation is a noticable difference. The woman on the 4 of wands looks more life-like. The stock feels more flexible. The details stand-out on many of the cards like Judgment. I loved the first edition but I do feel the reprint is a definite plus!--Tao
