Lo Scarabeo 2005--catalog/download

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 30 Dec 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Among the new things I found in the mail was a 2005 catalogue from Lo Scarabeo...and I saw some decks for February 2005:

Tarot of the Secret Forest (Lucia Mattioli)
Hidden heart of nature, colored pictures on one side, black and white images on the other of the same scene for better divination. The designs look moody and magical...

Tarot of the 1001 Knights (Leon Carre)
Rich and lavish Arabian Knights tails, much ornate decorative symbolism

Tarot of White Cats (Severino Baldini)
Funny white cats in costume

I didn't see the new titles on the website, but I did see a link to download LWBs that go with the full-size tarots that Lo Scarabeo is also selling in the mini-size...

http://www.loscarabeo.com/downloads.htm

Just a heads up.

The July titles include a stunning Golden Tarot of Klimit and some pretty and unique decks such as Tarot of the 78 Doors (Pietro Alligro/Antonella Platano) about metaphorical doors and passageways and a rather graceful "Harmonious Tarot" style of floral-angel-muse designs that remind me of 1920s posters..the art work credits Waler Crane and Ernest Fitzpatrick...I'm going to haunt the Tarot Garden website for sample pics...

Aww dammit! Another cat deck? I'M working on one & was planning on calling it the White Whisker Tarot.....they won't be dressed in clothes though, but still.

Double D***!

Well, you can't have too many cat decks, can you? (grumble...why doesn't anyone work on a dog or horse deck??? Or cute bunnies. Or parakeets...)

Thanks for posting this Mari! I moved it to Tarot Decks.

[quote= Well, you can't have too many cat decks, can you? (grumble...why doesn't anyone work on a dog or horse deck??? Or cute bunnies. Or parakeets...)[/QUOTE]

Well, I just picked up a deck of Elephants, and there will be decks about Frogs, Giraffes, Mice, Penguins, and Hedgehogs in the same series.

HudsonGray  31 Dec 2004
Mice? I'd be interested in those. Who put the elephant deck out? Do you have a link? I know Ursula Vernon is figuring on finishing her Wombat deck but that could take time.

Cerulean, were there any pics anywhere of the Tarot of the 1001 Knights? That does sound intrueging. So does the Secret Forest.

Gerbear  31 Dec 2004
The Elefanten deck was produced by Michael Kutzer, creator of the Michael's Tarot and the Neugereuter decks. The Elefanten deck is the first of a series of animal decks. I got number 3 in a limited edition of 32 decks. A review of the deck by Frank Jensen can be seen at Tarot Passages.

I don't have the reliable or quick means to scan with little cost, as others do.

I'm certain others will be glad to share scans as they receive catalogs. I've even heard others are able to scan text and share them quickly--I've heard others say they could do such things with their picture telephones!

I hope that others will post as they find out news--I'm delighted as others can, when such things can be updated.

Even the cards or photos that I created in the past came from much switch around and expense...we only have a surviving laptop after the loss of two hard drives, due to viruses.

My best wishes to all and sorry I have to repeat this apology about not being able to scan again...

This really sounds interesting. I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of the Tarot of the Secret Forest and the Tarot of the 78 Doors. I can't wait to see pictures!
I truly hope that Lo Scarabeo will update their website soon!

I was just going to post about whether or not there was such a thing as a deck based on the 1,001 Arabian Nights (having just watched Disney's Aladdin). Amazing how that works.

There are some other decks out there that don't feature cats. Gerbear already named the Cudahy series of Michael Kutzner (I also am awaiting the Elephant Tarot at this moment). And there is the Ferret Tarot by Elaine Moertl, Tarot de Chien (Tarot of dogs), Dolphin Daze Tarot (dolphins).

And of course the wonderful Animal Tarot by Paula Gibby and the Pet's Owners Tarot, which I think also feature several animals.

Hey Cerulean...

Any indication whether these titles will be available from Llewellyn in February, or initially from Lo Scarabeo via Alida?

Thanks

and then Tarotgarden.com, followed by other distribution channels...

That's just my haunting experience. Tarotgarden.com gets the titles pretty fast , faster than the bookstores that I look for titles or order from.

Tarot of the 78 Doors sounds fabulous! Isn't that what tarot does... open doors? I love images of doorways and passageways, and if done well, this sounds like it could be a great deck! I look forward to seeing pictures of it.

WolfSpirit  06 Jan 2005
I see that the Revelations tarot - that we first got to know as Adflatus - is also mentioned :)
This is a deck I have also been looking forward to when I first saw pictures of it. You can see more of this deck here:
http://adflatus.dthought.net/index.html

And there are also bigger pictures of the Animals Divine here:

I'd better start saving money now ;)

Exactly my thoughts. ;) And I just recently made myself swear not to buy decks that are not on my present (& small) wishlist! Whatever! ;)

How I wished for the Animals Divine to be published earlier in 2005 than August! Oh well, than I just have to study my still fairly new Shapeshifter!

RedMaple  09 Jan 2005
Thanks, Cerulean. A Golden Klimt! No pictures yet, I see. But that could be glorious.

Riccardo, do you know anything about plans on updating the LS website? I can't wait to see bigger pictures of the new decks! :)

RiccardoLS  13 Jan 2005
I sent yesterday a CD with the graphics to the people doing the website.
The news for the 2005 should be updated on the web quite soon (1 month?).

As for any major recostruction of the website... we are still in open sea :(
Sorry, but we have cronically no time for anything.

Thanks a lot, Felicityk!! It's great to be able to see the upcoming decks :). I think most of them look pretty kitschy though... but the Klimt Tarot looks WONDERFUL. I can't wait for that one to come out! (I hope his Danae gets a place in the deck as well!)

I love Klimt, but I'm skeptical of decks done "in the style of" a particular artist. The 78 Doors and Harmonious decks appeal to me at first glance, but I'll need to see more of them.

My (very personal) take on the decks ^^

Tarot of the Secret Forest: it is the one I like most. It will be among my top rated.
It is not traditional, not at all, but it is really gorgeous, and interesting, and full of substance. It is rather dark, not at all sweety and fairy.

White Cats: what you see is what you get. Do not dig deeper as it is hollow.

1001 Nights: no... I don't like it. Too cluttered, too artistical...

78 doors: interesting in a way. I sort of like it.

Harmonious: very classical... traditional. But it is not a show of originality ^^

Klimt: it will be GOLDEN deck. And that means even us won't know the end result until we see it. This time the gold impression will be used unobtrusibily, here and there, to give sparks, and lights, rather than surfaces, like on other golden decks. Unless we really do some mistake, this is going to be really really good.

Reflections: Dark, modern, a bit aggressive.
But interesting to anyone who could connect with the artwork.

Methamorphosis: it is a very well thought deck, with many layers and a careful balance. It may be a little scholar-wise with so many references to myths, literature and even science. But a very good deck, indeed.

I love the fact your not a walking advert Riccardo. I also love the fact that I disagree with you ;)

For me, from a pure visual perspective, the Golden Tarot of Klimt is outstanding. The readability of this deck I think will be effected in the usefulness of the LWB. It's definately on my must have list.

Another interesting deck is the Tarof of Metamorphosis. Though I am put off by The Sun card. It's not my idea of Happiness and looks damn creapy. I'll have to see some more cards to see the overall style.

Tarot of Reflections - hmmmm I kind of like the art but it seems awkardly executed.

Tarot of the 78 Doors - could be good.

Harmonious Tarot- This could be a grower. the style gives it a instant classic flavour.

Tarot of the 1001 Nights- Gorgeous, not sure how it would read...

Tarot of the White Cats - Can't tell as the sample cards as standard. Though Strengh is an interesting twist.

A suprise for me was the choice of the decks to make small editions of and the choice of decks to make into sets.

Mini decks include- Witchy Tarot, Tarot of Mermaids, Tarot of Gnomes. No Fey? and what is it with the hideous Gnomes that people like so much?

As for the Sets but the Universal Tarot and New Vision, standard Waitesque fair. Why no Secrets?, Dante, Libre T? Decks that actually do need more explaination?

Non the less can't wait for them to come out.

Actually, I don't think anyone likes them. LOL They've just become a kind of running joke theme-deck in this thread. The uniting factor in the discussion about the Gnomes seems to be the fact that they hideous and cutesy-wutesy, but several people inexplicably felt compelled to purchase them in the recent $5 Llewellyn Deck-a-thon. No one can say why ...and the Gnomes aren't talking yet.

RiccardoLS  21 Jan 2005
Regarding Mini-Tarot and Set/books

For the Mini-Tarot, LS choose usually the best selling decks.
Witchy has been selling very well. Gnomes, while it doesn't sell that much right now, has been the best selling deck ever for LS (it was also the first, and, by the way, the deck on which I learned Tarot). The idea for that is that a fresh edition may reawaken the fire.
As for the Mermaids, it sells quite good and does a nice complement to the other decks.
Some decks (like Vampires or Pagan) are too new... and some other (like the Fey), would have overstepped on Gnomes toes ^^

For the Set, the New Vision has been a major request since the deck going out.
The Universal, on the other side, was very needed as the deck - among LS decks - is the more generic and basic (in a good way).
We are thinking about a book on the Secret Tarot.
Dante is too much a low seller (and the bbok has already been written if never translated).
Liber T has not a book, mainly because of mine objections.
My argument is that we are yet unable to make a proper, perfect, translation. The translator would, at the minimum, have to know Crowley's work. And... and... and...
The idea is that it is better not to make a book, than make a bad book :(
It's a pity, because in Italian we have hundreads of page alreadywritten on the deck. The script Roberto Negrini gave to Andrea Serio was a large book in itself (averaging 5 pages/card). And then - Crowley style - there are all the cards that Andrea had to modify/redrawn.

We are now starting planting the seeds for 2006... let's see where we are going... ^_^

I'd like to see the secrets books, it might make me buy the deck. Regarding books in general. A lot of effort has gone into decks like the dante and Libr T but without a book they just look like pretty art decks. Can you imagine using crowleys Thoth without reading his book? or at least having a book from someone who knows what he was doing in the cards.

From a western perspective if you look at decks produced by llewllyn all their decks have a book, even robin wood which was a little late in coming. USgames does end up producing a deck for the book if from the start forthe majority of its decks. As does destiny books, and harpercollins.

A book isn't that essential for a clone deck as you have enough of a clue about what is going on to read them. but deck that have a unique or highly advanced system suffer for not having a book.

A deck such as the Shining Tribe, Pythagorus, William Blake, all become just pretty decks or not so pretty depending. But with a book you can spend time with them getting to know why certain things are included.

You might find that decks like dante and libr T aren't selling as they are complicated and the reviews reflect this and put people off. I've hardly used my copies as I don't know where to start with them. I'd like to know what the creators thought. Can you try for good translations of the books?? please!!!!

An example is the analysis on the Dante tarot on Tarot Passages, that deck has something.

A book on the Secret Tarot would be great! It is already one of my favorite decks, without every having read a book about it. I can only imagine how much more in depth my readings would be if I could see why things were included/excluded. The three of swords, for example, has always seemed to need more explanation.

Though I am glad that a mini version of it is coming out. I'd still love to see a book on it, though.

Riccardo!

You just made my day! That's an amazing piece of information. :) And actually all three of those are decks that get analyzed and discussed quite a bit because they are so obviously designed with care and insight. But maybe they are too initially complicated for casual buyers or first-time users. I agree with you about doing no book rather than a bad book, but even the[u]possibility[u/] of companion books for them is exciting.

A book for the Secret would be wonderful, but books for the Dante and Liber T could transform the way they are perceived and purchased here in the US. There's a certain amount of blundering around that has to happen, but I'd always rather know the creators thoughts as I blunder. Both of these decks, while beautiful, have an opacity arising from intelligent design that a book could help to diminish for their users.

all78degrees wrote:

While I know that translation can be expensive and arduous, I wonder if there's a middle road, that would still generate income for your company. What about publishing them online as "eBooks" that would be downloadable from the LS website. That would eliminate the need for printing costs AND would allow you to make corrections if need be. The "online" publication would allow you to edit and revise the text so that when you published them in hard copy you would have solved many of the problems at minimum cost to your company.

Just a thought,

Scion

PS Just got the magnificent 2005 Catalog in the mail, which I am enjoying thoroughly. That was incredibly fast and a real treat to go through. Thanks again.

I agree, I also would love to see a book for the Secret. It is also one of my favourite decks.

And the three of swords is one of my favourite cards, if not the favourite card in the whole deck. It indicates the sorrow and the hard conditions of the RW, but instead of just showing a pierced sword it is also presented as a moving on card. The rider is exhausted, yet he seems determined to complete his journey.
A card I would love to see some information on is the 10 of Wands or also the 5 of Pentacles.

I've got a great idea. Those who don't already learn to read Italian :)

Cheeper than translations, and it gives us an insight into the cultural background of the deck. Because you can't really "translate" a culture. Only interpret it. Learning a language is the best way into another culture.
Much of the misundersandings English-speakers - and especially Americans and British - have about the world today is because many of them don't learn foreign languages to any degree of proficiency any more.

And Italian is soooo beautiful!

There you go!
Make sure you don't go to Chianti-shire, though, or you'll be learning British English! ;)

I learnt thanks to Latin (and French!) and because I have an Italian aunt who had a stroke a few years ago and can only talk in Italian now. I can read it and understand it but not speak or write it. So that's next.

Cerulean  21 Jan 2005
but it takes time and focus...I've only done three pages of the general background booklet that comes with the 22-card version of the Romantici.

However I had problems with the Italian and English version of the Dante notes on Berti's website because the topic can be extremely detailed. I had to carry four books with me at a time, as not all references will deal with Dante Algheri's personal background --and even though I've had classes that dealt with the Divine Comedy and commentary!

I would dearly love to see English or Italian versions of the Secrets book, primarily English...but I don't always see the characters as strict male/female, sometimes I seem them in a disguise. Perhaps a graphic novel with a general storyline that echoes some of the characters? It would be wonderful if Nizzoli or Berti was interested...

I still find the Lo Scarabeo Egyptian book a wonderful resource, although the Fey and Visconti Gold have more play in my 'tarot reading'.

Pictures alone, that deck seems to sell or appear in many collections, but many many questions on the minors...visually it resembles the El Gran Esoterico minors, but no book in print seems to deal with the minors of the El Gran Esoterico or the di Vetro...

Pictures of Esoterico...

http://www.tarot.com/about-tarot/decks/browsedecks.php?newdeck=8

I would dearly like to know if the old di Vetro book written to accompany the 78 card deck had dealt with the unusual minors...and if it will ever be reissued as a set in Italian or English...it sold out before I could afford to buy it from Trigono.com.

I'd signed up by email to get a free catalog, about 2 weeks back, and was just wondering if I'd done it wrong because nothing had come. But it came today! Nice Italian stamps on the envelope and everything. It's a thick one and worth the wait.

bleuivy  22 Jan 2005
Ugh. I'd put off ordering a catalogue because I know I'll want to buy everything in it, but I am resisting no longer. *Bleu rushes off to order a catalogue.*

As for the Secret Tarot, I went and flipped through my deck again last night, and realized there are a lot of cards that I'd love a fuller explanation on, and the 10 of wands and 5 of pentacles are among them. Oh well; even without a book, it's still one of my favorite decks. And I'll probably order the mini deck when it comes out. I travel all the time, and I'd love to have a pocket version to take with me on long backpacking trips. The bigger decks sometimes are just too big to fit into a camping backpack, what with all the other camping stuff shoved into it. :)

firemaiden  27 Jan 2005
I think I like the Secret Forest Tarot the best, but I'm sorry, I don't like the idea of having a black and white version of the card on the back. Will there be plans to release a single-sided version of the deck as well?

I like the 1001 Nights a lot too. I gather this is a deck put together from Illustrations by Algerian artist, Léon Carré (1878-1942) for Mille et une Nuits (1926).

Stregaverde  29 Jan 2005
I just saw I Tarocchi dei Segreti Mignon in a tabaccheria today, and pointed it out to my husband. "See that, honey? I want that. That would make a great little gift sometime. Sometime soon." :) He dutifully took note. I went back later myself and bought Tarocchi di Vetro and Tarocchi di Casanova. They were wonderfully helpful at this place, they even gave me the 2004 catalog to look through, and told me that they could order anything that they did not have in stock. For reference, Riccardo, it was a shop on via Independenza in Bologna--they are doing a wonderful job of displaying and selling LS decks.

After reading through this thread, I have just sent in my request for a catalog--since I'm in Italy, I hope it arrives quickly (but knowing the Italian postal system, I seriously doubt it). And my husband is now walking around with a prioritized list of decks to buy as gifties--this tabaccheria is very close to his office. Hee! Between this and Alida, life is good! Adding Tarot of the Secret Forest to my wish list.

I'd buy a Secrets book in Italian or English, it sounds like a wonderful idea!

Stregaverde  02 Feb 2005
It just arrived--within three days!!! Not only does that speak of fantastic response time on the part of LS, but I do believe that it's a miracle for the Italian postal system. ;)

Oh, the drool factor is high for this catalog...

Riccardo,

can't you just publish it in Italian? I know I'm probably quite a minority, but for me it would be worth brushing up the little Italian I have to be able to read a book on Liber T, by its creator. Maybe a very limited, or ebooks-only edition? Just name the price...

I like that the Secret Tarot doesn't have a book of set interpretations. I could tell you two versions of what is going on in the Five of Pentacles, one from her point of view and one from his. Someone else might have an entirely different explanation. If there was a book it would just flatten out into another set of "right answers".

The Secret Forest deck looks so intriguing. I imagine reading spreads where some of the cards are colored side up and some are b+w side up, perhaps indicating aspects of the situation that are still in flux.

Oh yes, I loved looking at the updated site today.

I'm in love with the Hidden Forest tarot, and the Tarot of Metamorphosis (spelled "methamorphosis" on the box, is that a spelling error? or is it an alternative spelling I don't know about?). I'll also have to have the Klimt, although I'm not a fan of Klimt really.

I am curious to see how the 1001 nights deck works out. I realize it is an adaption into a tarot deck of previously existing, and very famous illustrations of a 1930's french edition of Mille et Une Nuits...

Lo Scarabeo has done nicely with adapting pre-existing artwork to tarot in the past, like the minors on the Fairy Tarot.

As promised, I have taken down my page so as not to tread on Lo Scarabeo's toes. All the samples I scanned in are now available on their site.
