So which decks does everyone have on the back burner?
I find that at any given time I usually have three or four decks that I want to immerse myself in to some degree because there is something about them that seems incompatible with casual use.
Right now my backburner decks are:
Thoth Tarot (I want to study it side by side with Duquette's book when I have a chance)
Celtic Dragons - I've been putting this one off for years now, a growing interest in dragons has pushed this one back to backburner status.
Wirth (French edition) - Still waiting to get a copy of Wirth's Tarot of The Magicians to study this with.
Shining Tribe - got this one to work with Pollack's Forest of Souls, but I got Tarot for Yourself at the same time and want to finish that first (see a pattern developing yet?)
What separates these decks out from the others in the great heap is that I don't think of them as fun collector's decks I really want to become fluent with them but right now my tarot study is very general and these poor decks have to wait.
So what do other tarot enthusiasts have as peripheral decks?

I Tarocchi Egiziani by Laura Tuan
This is an Egyptian-themed Italian deck
based on the Alliette/Etteilla "tarot"
...I love it, but what can you do..?

An interesting term, "backburner". But it is probably better than my own 'internal' term for this idea, which is "slow-lane". :-)
My shortlist here, of decks I'd like to spend some serious study time upon, includes:
1. Tarot of the Spirit - and the massive book that one can get for it(which I did). Great depth to the art. This one could keep me busy for quite a while.
2. Margarete Petersen Tarot - I anticipate this one being a real adventure into both tarot and abstract art.
3. Kazanlar Tarot - which should provide a journey that includes aspects of a variety of cultures and religions.
4. Navigators Tarot of the Mystic Sea - I'm looking forward to setting sail on this particular sea!
5. Haindl Tarot - this one has been put off repeatedly, but I can feel its time coming...coming...coming.
These are the Leaders. I have a few others, "sitting even further back on the stove".

Interesting topic, and what's especially interesting about it is that the same decks seem to be appearing on peoples' backburner lists. In my case it's Haindl, Thoth, and Tarot of the Spirit too. Maybe this year.... :)

Cerulean sometimes uses this as a pull-your-own-oracle.
The Italian title such as "Il Cielo" for number four means sky... and running through the blur of words, I pick out the following: "stars, tunic of azure sky, Hathor, Nut & Isis, nutrition and dispensing of vital fluid, maternal and regeneration function, lunar crescent, in speaking the name of Hat or Hor(cus), the significant letters of the home of Horcus. Sky, sun, moon, natural assimulation of Hathor to sky. The dance, music and love in the copy of the ancient deities, nucleous of bipolar energy, ancient incarnation of aspects of violence and mortality. In fact the quality of the spouse and mother of the sun, 'essence of fire' ; provides maintenance necessary for the regeneration of the mummy in the continuance of afterlife from the entombment."
Now I'd have to go to the Italian-English dictionary to put it together. What I do is that sometime thing of picking up one card, studying the keywords and checking the description...after a few years, I'm picking up more words without the dictionary. A blur of impressions above makes a fascinating ''pick-me-up" for poetry and also helps me think on my slow jog of learning, how much I am enjoying what tarot deck simmering is cooking in the back-burner--a warm potpourri delicately simmering.
Oh joy, I have a nice little study pick this week with an Italian language dictionary.
I rotate Golden Dawn 20th century style decks ( Rider Waite close clones; Thoth-style & Thoth) and various Italian Milanese-style or other 'other language' decks. Sometimes I pick up a Marseilles style and Japanese anime when I'm in this 'other language that is not English or Italian'.
Regards,
Cerulean

I have a few backburners, bought because they appealed to me, but could not find the time to get to know better:
Soprafino
Crow's Magick
Odin's Journey Cards (not tarot)
Dreampower (called tarot - but stretching the meaning a bit ;) )

I just recently moved the Medeival Scapini off the back burner after about 5 yrs. The new companion book, Art and Arcana, helped it finally happen.
My new (to me) Thoth is patiently waiting its turn along with
Tarot of the III Millennium
The Witches Tarot
Shakespearian (been there for a while)
Peace,
April

I have a few on the backburner too.
The Thoth is one deck I really want to try and get into this year.
Tarot of the Spirit
Osho Zen
The Ancient Egyptian Tarot
Golden
Tarot of Prague
The Golden and the Tarot of Prague are the easy ones to start to study properly, mainly because they follow Rider Waite symbolism. :)

The one that really got put on the back burner for me is the Buddha Tarot. I started studying it, and really love it, but got involved with the Legend and Golden study groups. I know I will get back to it soon.

I got the Dante deck for my birthday last year. I love it, it's beautiful, and it's on the back burner because it looks to be something I will really need time to get into. There's a lot to it.
Some others:Tarot of the Imagination. Pagan tarot.
I love these decks to death, but once again, it's all about the time factor.

I Tarocchi Egiziani by Laura Tuan: Oh joy, I have a nice little
study pick this week with an Italian language dictionary. Yes. I bought this beautiful deck out of pure infatuation,
and with no regrets, even knowing the rather extensive
book was written only and entirely in Italian. (Big sigh!)

I am currently working with the Buddha deck, which has been on my back burner for months.
Next up (unless I get distracted by another deck) is the Gendron. I've liked the deck for years, and finally got the book that recently came out.
Others are the Hudes, I Am One, Ananda and Merryday.

Decks on my backburner include...
The Baroque Bohemian Kitties, The Sakki-Sakki, and my original Hanson Roberts.
That means currently...I am working with the Spiral, the RWS, The Thoth, and the Ferret. It's a great combo! Occasionally they get into some heated conversations...but mostly, they get along.

Unfortunately, all my decks have been on the back burner for about six months. I was just looking at them the other day, trying to decide which to use to get back in the saddle with. I haven't decided yet, but the following are in the running:
Oswald Wirth
Hadar
Ancient Egyptian
Knapp-Hall
Crystal
Hermetic
Medieval Scapini
.....I think I'll stop now, the list is getting 'way too long!

I'm trying to do an in-depth study of one deck a year; this year it's the Marseille - and no, I haven't started yet, but maybe this weekend. Anyway, other decks on my list include
1. The Voyager (I've always thought I would like it, if I got used to it)
2. The Haindl (ditto)
3. Waking the Wild Spirit
4. Vertigo
5. Fey
Five is enough for now - that takes me into 2010 if I do one a year :P.

I am wondering if part of the reason these decks are on the backburner is that we are setting these conditions when things will be just right for us to start working. Maybe these are a bit unrealistic and we should just dive in. Will the universe ever really converge appropriately to create the perfect environment to learn my Thoth deck?

In my case, it is more a matter of buying more decks than I can handle, my greed for decks is bigger than my study time. And I don't spend all my free time studying tarot, there always seem to be other things to do lately...
