This is a book by Anton Szandor LaVey. It caught my eye at the bookstore today, so I brought it home and read it. Let me tell you -- I laughed out loud. It is so ridiculous -- I had to share it with you guys!
It was written in 1970 and is aimed towards woman. It is basically instructs "how-to" be a witch, basicially by presenting yourself as "available" to men. There are chapters devoted to what type of clothes you should wear, shoes, makeup, perfume, etc. -- some of the chapter titles are "Stockings versus Panty Hose" "By His Automobile Ye Shall Know Him" and "Learn How to Be Stupid" (!!!!) Pretty much what the entire book says is that if you are even reasonably attractive you have "witch" power to "charm" a man (or men, depending on your appetite, haha) --- and if even if you are ugly there is hope... haha... listen to this: "If you're getting on in years and have a nose like a potato with a body to match, don't kid yourself.... Instead, get yourself a couple of cats, fill your house full of weird bric-a-brac, learn to make cookies, and let it be known you're a witch... Soon you'll have more worthwhile male friends than you ever would have... " :P
Overall the book was quite amusing, if taken in the right way -- and a nice break from my usual "occult" studies...
HOWEVER, there were some valid ideas/points this guy makes. One of them is this "if you want to be a witch, you'd best learn the first three dimensions before you concern yourself with the forth." Good advice, me thinks. Also, I do agree that women have strong sexual power that they often either neglect or conceal ... whereas it is something they should revel in and enjoy. .... hope I worded that correctly -- but I think you know what I mean... I think in order to face the Goddess you have to recognize her in yourself in ALL her aspects. (some advice I need to reflect on for myself, at least.)
anyhow, that sums up my book report. :P
thoughts? comments? tomatoes?

The Satanic Witch was one of the first books I has bought when I started studying the occult. Anton Lavey makes very valid points. I like his points regarding the clock and body type. I am a six o'clock witch. So it is easy for you to know what I look like physically. I am tall and thin(not like a 4:00) but I do have a nice shape and soft features. I get along with six o clock males but they are not masculine enough for me. I love the 1'oclock males. I like short men and the 10 o'clock male(who is sort of on the heavy side). Actually I can look like a 4:30 to 5:00 female if I decide to lose weight to get into a pair of jeans. I seem to attract guys from the upper half of the clock.
I know Lavey used the elements to describe the clock. If a person is a Cancer (like yourself) one wold expect you to look like a six o' clock female. Sometimes it does not work that way. When one is dealing with physical appearances look at the persons rising sign. My sun sign is Scorpio and my rising sign is Scorpio and it along with Cancer and Pisces falls in the six o'clock category. That is why I look the way I do according to the clock method. (LaVey did not say the rising sign thing to compare with his method I did. When you start to study the occult a little more things seem to fall in place, you will eventually figure things out). Now, you may be a cancer(usually cancers, scorpios and pisces have blond hair and blue eyes and are tall and slender. Think Miss America) but you have for example black hair and are rather short and round. Take a look at your rising, it may be that your rising sign is an earth element: taurus, virgo, capricorn and see if it corresponds to the clock method. I am not saying you look like this it is an example.
I like Laveys work. Do not blow him off yet. But if you do that is cool also. Lavey is not really an advocate for the NEW Age Light movement but he says some interesting things.

hey babe, :P
actually, I'm a gemini. cancer is my moon. and scorp is my rising...
but the whole clock thing was confusing. I couldn't figure out what type I am! though I'm thinking three... ??? maybe? I dunno.
I just found out that this guy wrote the Satanic Bible too. I remember looking at that book when I was in high school -- and my first impression was that it was pretty Self-oriented (a.k.a. - selfish) -- no offense! just my opinion.
The whole clock thing seemed pretty "mathematical" -- so I'm pretty wary of it's ability to "calculate" people, since people are more than just numbers or types (though -- I guess this is what astrology does... hmmm...)
The more I'm learning about "New Age" stuff, the more I'm also learning about so-called Satanic things... and I actually think it's of value to be aware of both... though, personally, I would like to use whatever energy generated from "satanic" means for the "benefit of all"... if that is even possible... again, I dunno. anyway, what do you think about this whole New Age Movement?

Oh, I thought you were a cancer. Sorry about screwing up your sun sign.
I think the whole New Age Movement is a gateway to the higher wisdom of a specific entity. I will use my own experiences. The first book I purchased regarding magick was by Amber K. "Magick for begginer". Then I needed more so I graduated to the Satanic Bible, but I needed more. I studied the Lesser Keys of Solomon more commonly know as the Lemegetton(sp) but that was not enough. I started with seeing auras and now I see dead people and Angels won't let me pick my face off the floor when I summon them. LOL, what next? I need more and more.
That is how I see the New age movement using my experiences.

I have the satanic witch, but haven't read it. You got me interested in this clock thing tho, so i'll probably pull it out tonight.
Anyway, don't let that book turn you off of the Satanic Bible. Its a wonderful book. I perused the SW and didn't see anything interesting, and like you saw some stuff that just seemed so wrong. And I'm not saying that you will agree with everything in the SB, however the first part of the book is fantastic if you approach it with an open mind and consider why he thinks what he does and really contemplate it. If you didn't like SW, i reccoment skipping the whole keys and ritual section of the SB.
My two cents. I SO wish i had the satanic bible isntead of the satanic witch. I think i have anothe ritual book of his too. Where I got them is anyone's guess.

Anton was a very… fascinating person.
Gave some great outrageous interviews to the press...
Loved sex, drugs and rock & roll...
Was a friend of Timothy Leary...
Started his own VERY different church/religion (sex & drugs)...
Wrote some extremely interesting and controversial books…
I would recommend his works to anyone, if for no other reason than he was considered so controversial in his day (come to think of it, he still is), but especially someone interested in occult studies. Got to AT LEAST read his "Satanic Bible"!
All in all, not a bad obit.
meatbox666:
Like you take on old Anton and his work.

Let me tell you all how I stumbled across Lavey's work.
*laughs*
This is hilarious.
The day before Holloween I purchased a Oiuja board. *laughs*
The Parker brothers variety. I broke it in with my friends that day. We were screwing around with it and finally I had to go home. It was getting late and I had class in the morning.
Later that Holloween day I planned to go with a friend to a Holloween parade. I decided before I get dressed I'll screw around with that board. I'm screwing around with it and it starts spelling out LA.......
I say, "what the hec are say saying dude? Are you saying your name is Lavar?" Well, I never figured it. I lit a candle to remember him while I got dressed.
Well, a couple weeks later I stumble across the Satanic witch. Hell, the name never registered. Then a few months later, the Satanic Bible etc. Man, I decided to look up that guy Lavey on the comp to get his bio . OH GOD!! Come to find out he died supposedly that year on Holloween. *laughing*
That is what the website says. I feel he died a couple of days early on and the family says Holloween. But, maybe he did?

The Satanic church claimed Anton Szandor LaVey (his daughter says his real name was Howard Stanton Levey) died on Halloween, but in fact he died on Oct. 29, 1997, missing it by 2 days.
Here's a interesting website that says he wasn't the bad boy he wanted to be...
http://exposing-the-occult.00server.com/custom.html
And here's one complied by his daughter that really trashes him (ahhhh, family love)...
http://www.churchofsatan.org/aslv.html
both state his death as Oct. 29, 1997
He may have been a charlatan, but he was an interesting charlatan... :D

I still find him fascinating and certainly don't hate him. He did, indeed, have awesome personal magnetism.
I always wondered about his 'exploits' and then 3 years ago I started seeing the interesting things I showed you. But I still think he's worth reading because he did influence so many people (including me :D )

One's children can be THE harshest critics , because they see things that the parent may be able to hide from the rest of the world, but children are very perceptive! And especially when one sees their parent as a LIAR and a hypocrite, they may relish in exposing them to the world!
I have never read any of his books. I did read the 2 websites posted. I agree that everything is not sweetness and light . AND that one's desires need to be given more validity and perhaps outlet than traditional religions allow......................and that one's "dark" feelings are valid ...............etc.
BUT after reading the daughters website, it sounds like for one, the majority of his life and past was a fabrication meant to impress people looking for a dark hero. AND it sounds like he just went the opposite of "good" and really encouraged his dark emotions to run wild and out of control, like by beating his wife, women , and pets. There's nothing admirable in that at all.
I think there needs to be a balance between light and dark but I don't know if this guy found it! I do believe that satanist religions can show what is Lacking in Christian (Jewish, Muslim, even wiccan etc) religions. Denying one's dark emotions isn't the answer, but I don't think making a religion, church and monument to them is either! Oh well , just kind-of thinking out loud here.
I do really like marilyn manson however (mentioned somewhere here that they made him "the leader of the church of satan" handed down from Lavey. I don't think that was mm's idea though). Did you know that the 3 rd witch on charmed is marilyn manson's ex-fiancee ?

I like Manson, he is a wild dude. I have not seen charmed in a long while.
Has anyone heard of the Book Necronomicon. I had a copy early on in my studies. I never used it. Then I purchased the Necronimicon spell book by Simon. That I almost used I threw it away.
One day I got really high. *laughing* I smoked out of the bong: The Graffix Bong. The spell book was on the table. I started looking at it. I said "Hell noooooooo" *laughing* So, the book seemed to pull me towards it. I said to myself "wait a freaking minute, I am high and that book seems to be talking. LOL, I did not like what it was saying. That is a very powerful book and I did not even use it. If anyone is using the Necronomicon Spell book by Simon: get rid of it. That book is evil. I really feel that book is evil. Now, if you are using the Necronomicon spell book let me know of your experience. I may consider repurchasing, but that book is evil.
I threw that little thing in the trash. It was not because I felt the contents were a false, there is something amis about the book.
What are some books that you stay away from because they seem to emmanate an evil or power that you cannot control?

I know about Rose. I've seen a number of her movies (McGowen fan). When she was first on Charmed I was so upset because her acting was HORRIBLE. However, over the course of the show she has improved dramatically. I think the episode that helped her the most was when she and Phoebie switched bodies. It was aparent that they'd acted out the scenes themselves and imitated each other. However, having to imitate Mellisa really did Rose good.
I'm also a Manson fan, though I favor his older work. And I haven't heard his latest album.
Well, I cracked open the Satanic Witch last night. I had a lot of trouble figured out what I am. I understood the concepts, I just couldn't really fit myself in very well. But I believe that I am a four o-clock. Body type fits there, and personality too i think.

here's a question for all of you who read the Satanic Bible -- what did you take away from that book? what did you learn? what were it's main points?
thanks. (yah J.Sorceress -- I had trouble figuring out what type I am -- I don't think it's so cut and dry)
also not a big fan of Marilyn Manson or Charmed. :)

I took away:
Not being ashamed of my body and natural functions thereof. That not only includes the physical, which some religions teach are dirty and shameful, but also the mental. That includes selfishness, anger, lust, greed, etc. I learned a considerable amount about why we have those functions and what they’re uses can be.
I also took away, as this was one of the first magic books I read, that I don’t have to believe everything he says or everything he believes, to understand and accept and agree with some of his ideas and points. That was a big lesson for me at that point in time. I learned a little bit about ritual, a little about hypocrisy, a little about magical battles…
I learned that peoples hatred of a thing can blind them from the good things that they have learned from it, can keep them from creating something all their own from what they have come to realize. His hatred tainted his creation of a valid religion, and that saddens me. There’s a lot of good stuff in that book, but you kinda have to sift it out from the anti-Christian parts.

Good question.
I read the Satanic Bible shortly after it was published while I was in the military in beautiful southeast asia.
I approached it with a great deal of skepticism and cynicism, but at the same time I was desperately looking for answers beyond my catholic upbringing. I didn’t find them… but it helped me begin looking outside of the box, so to speak. So it was partly responsible for my continuing search which led me, much later in life, to the answers I was seeking.
But what I think was perhaps even more important (because it didn't just help me) was that his outlandish statements, interviews, TV appearances, and the profits that his books made… Helped other, better, authors break into the publishing world. I think that LeVay was, at least in part, responsible for the boom in new age publishing that occurred when HE published (’69-72 or so)
