One of the world's most famous heritage sites, Stonehenge, is threatened by a massive and highly destructive road-building scheme!
The stone circle will not be harmed, but its landscape setting will be badly damaged and other important archaeological remains will be destroyed.

having read the various news articles and press releases it sounds like a typical story of "we got this cool place and want to preserve it, but we also need to let people see it and how do we get them there?"
the news reports actually sound fairly positive that things might get done right... and of course that may be due to folks like this blowing the whistle loudly.

What bothers me is that these kind of things don't even surprise me any more. I think I'm getting used to the sheer stupidity of some people.
I'll definitely do my little bit to save Stonehenge.
Thanks for letting us know.

I am very disappointed by National Trust and English Heritage! I cannot understand this planning.
On one hand, they put up fences to keep ppl from getting too close to Stonehenge and on the other way they want to built a roadsite right next to it.
Thanks for letting us know.

thought i'd add a bit...
having been to stonehenge i've seen the dilemma (it's been years so i'm sure things have only gotten much worse).
there is a road there already... 2 actually the meet nearby.
one is a major road for vacationers and that's the one that needs modifying (the other will be closed, which will help somewhat).
the problem is that it's really just a country lane and becomes quite clogged.
the real issues are... how far away will the new road be, how much of it will be underground and will they bore it deep enough to miss damaging surrounding significant archaeological formations?
the site needs better access thus the road must be relatively nearby, needs better parking, needs a new visitor's center and needs protection.
this plan... if done correctly and addressing the issues above will work and help the site.
the problem is, as always (just like here in america) money and politics.
if you read all the articles it seems that perhaps the officials are realizing that this must be done in a manner suggested by those wishing to protect the site.
it's going to be done, one way or the other, so perhaps the noise making by individuals such as those who set up the website strega found for us has helped... either way, we should lend support as we can to make sure this magnificent heritage site is preserved for the future while realizing that it's preservation also means making it available to more visitors... lot's of visitors as that's where future funding for it's very preservation will come from.
