Having done Azure's chakra test "discovered" that my root
chakra was in need of work , big time .
Went away to find out exactly what root chakra is responsible
for , and found the below explanation :
"If there is some damage to this chakra , then we find ourselves
repeatedly coping with threats to our survival , which keeps
us from accomplishing other things. Issues like changing jobs,
moving , recurring health troubles , weight issues and/ or
feelings of fear for ones safety ."
So , I'd like to know
A) Do you agree with this definition?
B) Is "damage" the same as deficit ? If no , why not ......
C) How can the energy of this chakra be improved / developed?
( Is meditation the only way in , or are there others ?)

there are many, many ways to open and cleanse a chakra.
some tools used are tuning forks, colors, crystal bowls and gemstones (red or black for the root chakra).
healing with energy, from 'energy smoothing' (my phrase) to reiki, to complex shamanistic techniques to acupuncture.
visualizations, meditations... working on the parts of your life the chakra covers. i'm sure there are lots of other ways i haven't mentioned.
that definition sounds accurate to me although it does sound a tad dramatic. it is about your physical foundation. your physical body and health. your connection to the earth and groundedness. your sense of trust. the will to live. because it is about survival it also includes things like shelter and having enough to eat, along with feeling threatened and unsafe.
i think the question about damage being the same as deficit is kind of like the chicken and the egg question. which came first? imo, they effect each other.

it's also important to figure out exactly where the damage lies...
is it in the physical body? the adrenals (kidneys too)
the emotional body? aggression, anger, jealousy, etc.
the mental body? attitudes of separation, exclusivity, territory, belonging, your right to your own space, etc....
and then, is it blocked, does it need to be cleared? is it just emitting low energy at the moment, just needing a charge??
you can adjust the vibration of this chakra by any of the means zorya mentioned...personally, i enjoy the use of colours, crystals, essential oils and music the best...
also, i highly recommend affirmations...repeating them daily, morning and night, will help you greatly if you wish to activate this chakra...some i've found to be quite helpful are:
(from the Book of Chakras by A. Wauters...copyright to author)
- i trust in the goodness of life to carry me through.
- i belong wherever i am.
- i choose life.
- i affirm my right to the life i know i want.
- i cultivate constancy, stability, and a wholesome structure to support me through life's changes.
- i accept myself as i am.
- i am grateful for the experiences of my life.
i have others if you are interested...
you can also do meditations for this chakra...those are quite helpful...
as for colour therapy, finding a red glass and solarizing water in the glass (drink a glass morning and night) will help out alot...also, wearing more red will help...
crystals to wear or keep near you would be: ruby, bloodstone, hematite, black tourmaline, rhodonite (not rhodocrosite)...
you may like to apply essential oils to your lower extremities (in small portions & in a carrier oil)...you could try cinnamon or sandalwood (i like to rub sandalwood into my palms & inhale [lightly!!] before doing the affirmations)
and any kind of heavy drumming music you enjoy would be beneficial if you want to activate the root chakra (i like to put on a tibetan drumming cd i got ages ago & do the "sun salutation" yoga to the music)
hope this helps you...if you have questions feel free...there are lots of people here w/thoughts and ideas on this one, i'm sure!! :D
many blessings,
~azure

Being grounded is another big issue with this chakra. Are you grounded in your daily life, or is your energy scattered?
Try grounding meditations, breathing in red, dirt etc, spend time in nature, get your hands into dirt etc.
but yeah- survival whether spiritual, emotional or physical is a big issue with this chakra.
also- just a quick thought- ancestry, hereditry etc. Maybe increase your connection to your family and their past?

I personally think a lot of people(especially women) in Western culture have issues with the root chakra, since we are bombarded with news images designed to make us feel physically insecure. For example, I cannot answer the question, "do you feel physically secure all the time?" completly positively, since I know the statistics about rape in the US.
That said, practical steps can be taken to increase you sense of stability. Take a self-defense class, or try the meditations/ mantras others suggested. (Personally, I feel really grounded and secure when I'm wearing my Doc Martins! They make me feel invincible!) It is important, since a person who looks more confident (i.e., has a strong root chakra and is grounded), is much less likely to be targeted for an attack!
hope this helps,

what problems would an over active root chakra pose then?

Now that's a problem I've never had!
So I'm not entirely sure, but it seems to me like an overactive root chakra would make you way overly concerned about self-defense and protection and things like that... oh, say you were on a diet, and couldn't eat, but you spent all your time thinking about what you couldn't have... that might mean an overactive root chakra (?).
just a guess,

someone with an overactive root chakra may be too self-centered and egotistical.
they could also become violent, aggressive, dishonest, hyperactive and oversexed.
going by the chakra tests we've had here, most of our members seem to have underactive root chakras. ...although imho, being oversexed does not seem to be exclusive to overactive root chakras

actually, I thought being oversexed was more linked to the second chakra... and maybe the fourth, in the case of those of us with soul-mate lovers:-D
oh, and when it's phone sex, that would be an overactive 5th chakra! So, according to the test, maybe most of us are having mostly phone sex? Or trippy energy sex (6th or 7th chakra).
Actually, doesn't it seem like you can have sex from any of your chakras? I guess the only one I left out was the 3rd, and that's linked (probably) with S&M. So you could make a case for every chakra having it's own sexual function/dysfuntion:)
sorry, my mind's in the gutter... must be an overactive chakra or two!

hey i did the test tooo!
i had an underactive root chakara too (-25%) !!
but i thought it's not very accurate too. Cos i am rather independent, some what egoistic too and I don't really fear my survival in the world though of cos, i lend to fend bad guys off from messing my life :P
in any case, i think before I start to improve or open my chakras, i will want to be doubly sure that they are really in need of attention. :)
was told that u can use those long big quartz crystals to open the chakras too. :)

My understanding is that an overactive root chakra can be part of manic depression or bi-polar. Actually, it was explained to me that when the kundalini is fluctuating a lot and causing the root chakra to open and close it causes wild swings in manic.

Samantha
Is this definition true for what you experience in your life? or not?
That's all you need to work it out.
My take on it. If you were deficit, then you would not be expressing much will, going with the flow, indecisive. If it were damaged - well a deficit is damage too I guess, I would assume it all means the same just more or less of an issue depending on it's state.
I think the description is covering the issues generally - the field - of the root chakra and you just add common sense to it and what other issues would be relevent. For example, what functions do the body perform in that area and you get the general idea.
Oh - improving it -- all levels physical (exercise, diet, hey even tantra), spiritual (energy body development, crystals, essences, etc), mentally (attitudes about sexuality and procreation, hangups, emotional areas, etc)
Blessings
