Hi TB13, great to meet you ... hey, you're the same age as my daughter!
Anyway, first bit of advice is to read everything that came with the packet, especially if there is a little book of instructions/meanings.
First Rule - there are no rules! - yay
Second (non rule) rule - get a handles on the basic meanings here as Thirteen has very kindly and knowledgably written an article:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/basics/index.html
Next, off to Joan Bunnings site:
www.learntarot.com for a really good comprehensive FREE course that most readers here will tell you is a really solid foundation to build from.
Lastly, sadly, there are NO shortcuts. In fact, most readers will tell you it's an everlearning process that goes on throughout your life with the tarot because there is always a new perspective or new idea to learn from.
Apart from all that HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!
Best wishes

I disagree with allibee on one point. Unless it's an actual paperback book that came with your deck, toss it (or at least set it aside if you don't like to throw things away). I've found those little white booklets to be completely useless. Umbrae will tell you to burn it.
I do agree that you should check out www.learntarot.com. Also, look at Thirteen's Tarot Basics here on Aeclectic.
Finally, many people here will recommend that you not start out with the Celtic Cross spread because it involves 10 cards. It's probably best to start out with smaller spreads of 1-3 cards.
Good luck.

I agree with Keslynn about the little white booklets (LWBs) that come with the decks: more often than not they are of no use whatsoever...
If, in addition to Thirteen's Tarot Basics and Joan Bunning's site, you're looking for some good beginner's books, check this thread; it lists several good books to learn from.

Funny you should post this now....
Look in the Talking Tarot section next tuesday...
I'll be addressing that very question.

I wonder what deck you actually have TB? If you let us know here, that might have some bearing on future discussion. Have fun...

stick to three card readings. past, present, future, works very well.
keep a notebook. write down every reading. write down your feelings during the reading. write down words and or images that just come to you. thirteen's tarot basics will help for card meanings.
do not use the little white book!!!
do not try larger spreads.

actually, my first suggestion was to give someone who had absolutely no idea where to start, a starting point.
TB13 had no idea even how to use the cards, she is only 13 after all.
I wouldn't have suggested reading Thirteens basic meanings if the LWB was all she needed! I think you guys are putting the cart before the horse here.

HOW DO YOU KNOW TB IS ONLY 13??
There is something very suspicious going on here... I suspect UMBRAE as impersonating a 13 year old who can't spell in order to plug his course!

It could be that I'm incredibly psychic, it could be the 13 on the end of her name .... or ... get this..... it could be that I looked in her profile!
I was looking for the best approach to encourage TB... sheesh!

TB13 (sorry I can't type like that) I can tell somehow that you're sincere in your desire to know. :)
Stick around. You will learn.
Some good advice here. Do see Thirteen's Tarot Basics for meanings. Do see Joan Bunnings course. Oh! And don't miss what Umbrae has to say. })
You're going to have a lot of questions.
The answer most often given is: "If it feels 'right' to you, then it's ok. :) Soon, you'll know what those questions are.
Please feel free to ask. There's no such thing as a stupid question. ;)
