I'm gonna get my first Tarot cards in about 2 weeks, but I'm not sure how to read them...

Is there only one way or is there many ways to do it?

Can you do it wrong?

If you get to know something you don't want to know... Should I just foget it then?

I would like to get so much help as possible...
I want to learn more about different things...

Hi Kagura :) Welcome to aeclectic :)

I'm curious about what deck you will be getting?

There is no one right way to read tarot cards - if you look around the forum you will find an amazing variety of different views about that and about everything. I would say, learn all you can then do what seems right to you.

As for forgetting difficult info - I'm the wrong person to ask that. I don't believe that the cards show us anything we don't know. I see them as more of a meditation technique than a form of divination. So maybe others can help you on this :)

You might like to check out the FAQ (there's a button at the top of the page). Then you could have a look at tarot basics by thirteen at http://www.aeclectic.net/basics/index.html and maybe at http://www.learntarot.com

Then a quick look around the Using Tarot Cards forum to see what we've been talking about lately and voila! Well, maybe not voila, but you should have a new set of questions to ask then :)

Look forward to hearing more from you,

Hej! Welcome!

First of all, don't worry so much before to start!!
You can learn tarot in many different ways. And you can read it in many different ways too. There's no a correct or uncorrect way. Just experiment to find the more apropiate for yourself. One of the beautiful things it has is the variety of approaches you can take.

I tend to think that when the cards show something you dont like its because you can do something about it (or just be aware). Tarot gives advices and insights... Since you're using the cards is because you want to listen what are showing. Future is not writen, you change it with every move you make.

Hi Kagura!

Welcome to Aeclectic! I am excited for you, because I remember last summer when I bought my first deck and the wonderful journey I have been on since then. I too am curious what deck you purchased.

Don't worry about reading the cards at first. Just get to know them. Look at the whole deck one by one and write down your first impressions in a Tarot journal. I use one of those Marble Composition notebooks and I just wrote down things I noticed in the cards, colors, what I thought the cards meant. I really think you should start a journal. Nine months later I look back at what I wrote and it amazes me!

After you have explored all the cards on your own, try the sites that fairyhedgehog listed above, they are excellent. Compare them to what your impressions were. You will be surprised. Don't worry about what the right way is. Just explore them! After a while, do a reading for yourself and see how it goes. Practice and become familiar with them. There is a lot of potential in the cards.

Let us know how it goes,
Mimers

Everyone here has given you wonderful advice.

I would just add: HAVE FUN!! Enjoy the cards, the experience, the shuffling, turning over images, letting your imagination run wild, and WRITE down what you see, what you think, what excites you! Enjoy the presence of being with them.

Wrong way to do them? Hmmm, I found a wrong way when I started getting interested in them 25 years ago. I bought a book that told me I had to know all about astrology, numerology, zodiac correspodences, this huge wheely thing with lines and circles and on and on before I could even pick up the cards. It even gave me a test I had to pass before I could start using my cards!!! The book got filed away, as did the four sets of cards I had bought because I really was so interested in these wonderous cards, and I didn't touch them again for another 18 years!

That's the wrong way: being told you have to have a PhD to use them.

Again, HAVE FUN! :D

Hi Khatruman ... I'm wondering. Do you still recall the name of that book?
