I just bought an Egyption Tarot deck, and I don't really understand the book. It speaks of things like divorace, marrying old men, etc. I don't see how those things apply to my life. If anyone can offer a good description of the card meanings, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Another question, what do people mean when they say "Oh, that is my card?" Are they referring to something like astrology, and a sign?

Who was the author/artist of the one you are talking about?

And we'll add these questions:
1) Was the book the little white book that came with the deck or a big, real book?
2) Which card descriptions confused you?
When people say, "That's my card" they can mean any number of things:
That's my card for the day (I'm feeling like a Hermit today!)
That's my card for this year (I've been a real Hermit all year, hiding from friends, living on my own....)
Or, That's my card! (I'm a Hermit).

Um.. It's basically your generic Egyption Tarot deck, I don't know the maker, but I do know the deck is..well generic. The illustrations are rather poor, and have no color except for the yellow background, and black ink. I don't know why I was even compelled to buy it since I usually go for bright and pretty. Some reason I was drawn to this deck. ANyway, that information is from the little white book that comes with the deck. I haven't bought a tarot book, because all the ones I've found talk about the Rider deck, and I don't have it. I can tell you what some of the cards are...the (I don't know how to put this better) lower card? are the usual? pentacles, and stuff, but there's a slave of each suite, and I think a king and queen and knight (i don't have the deck with me) The major cards are like the alligator and stuff all relating to OMG Egypt! So, I don't know how much info this provides, but it's all i have at the moment.

Hi Landloper,
Welcome to Aeclectic!
I think I have seen that deck. Does it look like this one?
Egyptian deck
It sounds, from what you read, that they were descriptions of the court cards, but I am not sure. A lot of times people will pick a court card to represent the querant in the reading. This could be what they mean by, 'that's my card'.
I am not too familiar with anything Egyptian, so I can not help you much. I have one Egyptian themed deck, Ramses, Tarot of Eternity and it is based on RWS meanings.
Anyway, check out the link and let us know if this is the deck you have. Maybe we can figure it out for you.
Do you have any other decks? Is this your first one?

Hey, Landloper:
I know the deck you have, and no, it's not the best deck. But it's ESPECIALLY not the best deck for learning. Put it aside for now. We'll come back to it later. And forget about that little white book. Little White Books are almost always useless.
Here's what I recommend you do:
1) either buy a Rider-Waite deck--they're one of the most common, and inexpensive decks you can buy.
OR,
2) Check out this website which has all the RW cards, so you can study them on-line:
http://roswell.fortunecity.com/vanthal/232/RiderWaite/Majors/
You can see each one close up--and move onto the Cups, wands, swords and pentacles when done with the majors.
Okay. You there? Good. Now go here:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/
These are the Aeclectic Tarot Basics. I compiled them, but they're meanings distilled from a lot of discussions on this very forum. This is a good place to start. There's a story for each card, along with a little discussion on what it means and how t read it. It will introduce you to the Tarot.
Once you begin to understand the meaning of THESE cards and become comfortable with them, you can switch back to your Egyptian cards. They will be similar if not exact. That is, there will be a "Fool" card in the Egyptian deck even if it doesn't look exactly like the Fool you see in Rider-Waite there with the colorful motley and the dog.
These meanings should make much more sense then the little white book. In addition, you can check out these keywords to help you along as well:
http://www.learntarot.com/chmaj.htm
I think you'll see right away how the meanings of these cards can apply to your life. If you have any more questions, just ask. But trust me, this is a much better way to start learning then trying to make sense of that Egyptian deck right here and now.

Mimers, you got the deck excactly. Well, since I've been told not to learn on that deck, I have a question. I have a Fairy Oracle deck or whatever it's called, the one with all the fairies and no negative cards. Is that good to learn on? Should I still use it?

Hi Landloper,
If your Fairy deck is the Froud one, it is not actually a Tarot deck. So, obviously, you could not learn the Tarot using that deck. There is a Froud Fairey Oracle study group here though. You could probaly learn a lot about that deck there.
To learn Tarot, I would recomend like Thirteen said. Get a RWS, or one of it's clones and use Joan Bunnings site, Learn Tarot
If you can not afford another deck, you can use the link Thirteen gave you.
Good luck, and enjoy!
