3 of cups....an expression of feelings??

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 01 Jan 2005, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Ive had a few "tarot victims" over Christmas and when the 3 of cups comes up, ive explained it as expression of emotion and love...when someone feels 3 of cups, what does that mean, that they want to express their love? And how about when someone sees you as a 3 of cups...they see you as a very "expressive" person??

im really confused
any ideas??

I've seen the 3 of Cups as something that makes you feel good for the day, a private celebration or good feelings (reading that good book, getting that letter from a pen pal, cleaning out the closets). The 4 of Wands is the public celebrations with loads of people (weddings, parties, pot lucks). So a 3 of Cups is quieter. More like toasting yourself for a job well done, or just pampering yourself for a day & really feeling good about it. Could be private moments, even. Something that doesn't need to last long but you feel good about it as it happens.

I often look at this card as "friendship"....pending on the position and/or kind of question/spread would be the intensity of the said friendship. That and the surrounding cards.

I'm in agreement that it's friendship or sisterhood--small celebrations rather than large public ones. I've never seen it as a card about being alone in any way, however. I think there has to be at least one or two others to pat you on the back, share the love and all.

People, I suppose who at least feel like family even if they're not. It's certainly a card about support, love and laughter most especially. A time of sharing and moving forward.

For me it is often specifically about spending time with friends -- especially women friends. I see the three women as the three Graces -- so it's definitely about good feeling, and a non-competitive atmosphere.

I see the four of cups as a public celebration, could be a marriage (because of the Chuppah.) Also, wasn't this card known as "Harvest Home?" So I think of it as those good celebrations of Fall when there is plenty to eat, and good fellowship.

Thirteen, we posted at the same time, so I'm editing this to just agree wholeheartedly. Sometimes it's just tea at the kitchen table with friends, but definitely a card of loving friendship.

The only connection I would say it might have to being alone, is that it might point to the need to connect more to friends, if you've been in a solitary period.

This I agree with as well

Thank you all for your interpretations...so do you think if someone feels feels three of cups, its the feeling of unexpected and short-lived friendly love, and when someone sees you as the 3 of cups they see you as a friend...right?
Its easy for me to understand this card as an outcome card, but when it lays in the position of how someone sees you or feels for you im stuck...did i get the above right then???

Oh and by the way does anyone see this as a "LOVE triangle" situation card??-kind of like the lovers is sometimes meant to be...like a choice?

3 of Cups can be short-lived. Take it as a small group of friends sitting in the park having a mini picnic while enjoying the nature. It's a very good time to snuggle around and share intimate stories. However, soon the sun will set and night will come.

Half right. It feels like seeing a close friend instead of just any friend. Someone whom you can spill your emotions at.

I won't see this as a triangle love. 3 of swords is more like it.

The Marseille decks have the Lovers card with a man, two women, and a choice to be made (and Cupid above with his arrows). I'd use that or the 3 of Swords, each sword a person piercing the heart. Especially if the 2 of Swords shows up next, indicating a decision needing to be made.

WhiteRaven  02 Jan 2005
Well, I could see the "triangle" in some cases...although I wouldn't go out on a limb with a querant you don't know. I would see this as a consenting "triangle"..there are many couples that are quite comfortable with this concept...but not many will come out of the proverbial "closet"...thus, if you don't know your querant well enough..it would be kinda hard to tell if this is the case..and if you really felt that this was the case...it would be even harder to start talking about it.

Well I've had this card come up for my own situation before, and it was definitely a triangle, although I didn't know it at the time. On the Old Path, there is a man and one woman in front of him, but she is looking behind, to the other woman, who is facing forwards laughing. It always makes me feel like there is a big secret going on.

WhiteRaven  02 Jan 2005
That seems to me like the wife behind the husband laughing at the mistress that will never have what she has...

I guess it depends what deck you're using too...wow...quite the image in my head now..

Huredriel, you're right - in all the decks I have or have seen this is the most horrible 3 Cups - I loathe that woman in the front - she is one nasty piece of work. It has none of the lightheartedness, the pleasure and enjoyment of being with friends that the 3 Cups should have.

Friendship is what this card is about, sharing the the joy of life, and particularly with women.

Absolutely in agreement with WhiteRaven that if there's a "love triangle" involved it's a knowing and concenting triangle--a threesome; likely a one-time-for-fun threesome, not anything that's going on regularly.
