Using two decks?

I have read about using two decks together in one reading.

How would you spread the layout and read it?

What decks would you use together?

Tarot de Marseille and Tarot Erotica...

as for the spread - I'll leave it to your imagination. I make up my own spreads most of the time.

When I use 2 different decks it's to get 2 levels of information. So I pick decks that have previously seemed to have different kinds of messages. Like Osho Zen for a soul message and any version of the Rider Waite for putting the message into practice.

Or Thoth for a serious message paired with Animal Lords for an amusing slant on it.

Would you lay out one deck and then pick the same cards from a second deck, and lay them next to the first cards?
Lay them out next to each other in the same spread pattern with what card is pulled from each deck?
I never tried it. Just remember reading about using 2 decks in a reading. I don't remember it saying how it was done.
It's something I wonder about how to do.

As you practice readings, you'll develop your own style of shuffling and drawing that feels right. For me, it's shuffle, cut, restack and draw from the top. Occasionally I swirl cards on the floor and pick cards that catch my eye.

Whichever way, when I use 2 decks, I shuffle each one and ready it for drawing, then draw (for each position) one from deck 1, one from deck 2.

Try 2 decks for a simple 3-card spread and see what they come up with!

You could do a past/present/future with one deck for home life and one for work life. See if the cards make sense to you.

I have used two of the same decks before. (Just to experiment)
Just put the two decks together, shuffle or mix, cut & pick.
This way you can look for repeated cards.

This method is called "Comparative Tarot" and there is even a deck for it with 4 different decks on each card!
Check out Valerie Sim's site, and look for the associated Yahoo group.

I've tried it, and it does sometimes give a better, more expanded reading. It's also a GREAT excuse to collect decks.

This is what I did, a few times. It gave more depth to the meaning. I used the Gothic Tarot by Vargo and my Rider-Waite.

I very often use two decks for one reading. I like to lay out a spread once with one deck, and then with another deck, using the cards from the second deck to modify the cards from the first deck. I find it very telling the same cards show up in the same positions.

I did a reading for Lunalafey, (A Voyage to Somewhere with Luna) using a modified chackra spread, where I used a different deck for each chakra. I tried to pick the deck that seemed to best correspond to each chackra.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to note each way and read the links. I guess it will work if it feels right to the person reading.

I once tried an experiment back in the days when I only had three decks (I'm up to 12 now as of this week, LOL). I did a one card reading on a question, but picked one card from each of my three decks. I found it really quite interesting actually.

Each card answered the question, and there was some recurring symbolism showing up in each card, but at the same time, each had subtle differences in the way they answered. Comparing the three answers to the same question also gave me a deeper insight into the personality of each deck.

Anyway, it worked really well for me.:-)

I've sometimes dealt a Celtic Cross (no tomatoes please) from one deck and another one right on top of it from a different deck and gotten the same cards in some of the same positions or cards that heavily reinforce each other.

I don't know what the chances are of getting the same card as your outcome from two different decks, but I'm pretty sure it means that's the right card (does anyone else ever worry that they might be the wrong cards...like you stop shuffling and then give it one last shuffle or you cut and it's nowhere near a third so you feel like you "messed up" the cut and the cards might be all wrong?).

I like to use a "basic" deck and a "fun" deck, like Universal Waite with Whimsical or Giant Rider Waite with Tarot of the Gnomes. I like to deal the "fun" deck first to break the ice, so to speak, and then deal the basic deck on top of it.

Thanks, I'm going to give this tips a try. I might start with the one card reading from a few decks first. Then work my up.

It's always nice if the cards are the same size. I have two rider decks, different types though. One is regular, adn the other the golden waite. They would work well together.

I've done something like what Bar described, a reading with one card from each of five decks. Unlike what happened to Bar, my five cards didn't have much recurring symbolism at all, so it was almost like a normal five-card reading--a different perspective from each card. It was a great experience.

One thing I'd recommend is laying the cards face-down as you draw them and then turning them all over together. That way you're not thinking about the card you drew from deck 1 while you're shuffling deck 2.

That's a good idea. Thanks

I sometimes back up my reading with angel cards/oracles. I find this gets a more balenced and positive response :)
