I admit that I am one of those people who bought Blum's runes.
But, they were $5 and I couldn't afford anything more... but, like my tarot decks, have grown with me and I can't bear to part with them or replace them... well, maybe for a set of rainbow moonstone runes with good flash!
What's odd, at least to me, is that every time I spend a few minutes concentrating on which rune personifies me, I always draw Raido without fail. Odd, that. That's also the same rune that broke some years ago without explanation... glued it back together and it's been as good as new since.
Let's see... general recommendations:
I realize I may be shot for this, but if you are *not* looking for anything based in rune magic, tradition, or authenticity, but instead want something more oracular and for counseling, then go with Ralph Blum's rune sets. I have both the Book of Runes and the Healing Runes, and they did help me through some tough phases.
If you want rune magic, and don't care about authenticity, then Llewellyn has some books on runemal - Edred Thorsson and Freya Aswynn are pretty good authors. I would avoid Lisa Peschel's book as it's good for beginner's basics but little beyond that.
Last, if you want authenticity, tradition, oracular, and magical use, avoid Llewellyn and Blum and go straight for Thorsson's Weiser-published books. It's my humble opinion that his better works were done for Weiser. And, if you can stomach it, go read some of the better-translated epics.
I'm sorry if this made little or no sense... I'm up past my bedtime!
