Links to Emblem books?

le pendu

Hi,

Can anyone provide information/links about Emblem books, or better yet, online images?

Thanks,
robert

P.S. I'm particularly interested in iconography of the Virtues. Thanks.

Hey Kwaw and Pendu,

Not emblemata and I have a feeling you may know of it already, but have you seen Sigismondo Fanti's Triompho di Fortuna from 1526? In it the querent advances through series of elaborate wheels either via astrological reckoning or thrown dice. I recently saw a leatherbound facsimile which almost made me pass out with acquisitive envy.

Scion, those are great links.

The second reminds me of the Wheel, of course. The position of the devil's body is so similar to the tower; odd that he is sharing the wheel with an angel, who I assume is Fortune? I'm not sure I've seen her represented like this before.

The character holding the huge die is wonderful. Do you know what the character beside him is doing? Astrology?

On the world we have what looks like a pope or popess.

Like the links that kwaw provided, the images you provide also show a strong connection to fortune telling.

Interesting the use of dice here, with the 21 possible combinations, or the connections to the hours in the day.

I love the last one from Michael's site. Of course, to see Le Pendu outside of Tarot is a rare treat!! Do we have any idea who's chart that is? It reminds me of something I took a picture of at Oxford when I visited, at Christ Church.

There is also the Glasgow University collection:

Which has previously been discussed for example the foolish man playing cards/dice:

Mignaults writing on the emblem may also be of interest:

Which has been discussed in other threads, for example:

Also in what I think was my first ever post to Aeclectic in January 2004:

Michael Hurst and others have also made some interesting contributions on the subject of emblems in the TarotL forum.
