client discretion?

Mallah

Has anybody gotten any impression--either by direct client say-so, or by other means--that some might not choose to sit with us because we are in a public location? "My boss might see me..." or, "Fred from accounting might see me here getting a reading on my lunch break..." or "One of my friends might see me and think it was weird..."

Last fall I spent several days reading on a public mall, and got lots of business...(will go back in the Spring)...but it occurred to me that if it had been lunch hour on a weekday, many of the passersby would be business people out for lunch, and they might be less inclined.

Some places, you feel not so out-of-place: a psychic or metaphyisical fair for example...but in a Farmer's Market, or Coffee Shop (depending on the clientele and part of town), you might be more....freaky.

Teens, for example, are very very self conscious, and will only sit for you if they are with a group who wants to sit as well (peer support) or in a place where their friends will not possibly see them.

It occurs to me that Guys might have a problem sitting "for advice"....like stopping and asking directions....it's very much a guy thing to try to make your own way in the world. Perhaps that's why 90% of our clients are female.

All this self-conscious self-talk might go on and we as readers might not really think of it that way, as we are very used to the cards; they are something we do every day. For most people the cards are very different.

I bring this up cause I'm wondering if anyone's actually heard people SAY it, and also because it occurs to me that choosing the location to "park it" will have a marked result on how many sitters we get!

Maybe you should offer 'Mens Night' ! <JK>

Sometimes a public place might be a 'little too public' for some people's tastes, whereas inside a shop is a controlled space.

You gonna hit 4,000 tonight, bro?

That would be a lot of messages, but I probably could hit it by New Years!

Do, that doesn't seem to be an issue in my community. In fact, in venues where my table has been a part of the window display, I tended to have more readings than I do now, where I have a separate room with a privacy curtain and no window.

The privacy-thing that DOES seem to be an issue, is whether tehy can trust you not to spill the beans to anyone else. To that end, whenever I read publicly, I have a little laminated sign saying that whatever comes up in the reading is between me and the client only, at all times. It reassures people.

Once again - I think much of this 'perception' has to do with the mindset of the Querent, and what they are seeking a reading about.

Someone who has just been through something traumatic and needs some serious input may not be willing to sit down in the carnival atmosphere of the food court at a shopping mall where ANYone and everyone walking by can eavesdrop (intentionally or otherwise) on their reading; they would feel comforted by curtained partitions, screens or walls between them and the general public. A corner or back booth at a coffee shop is more 'private' than a table near the community trash cans or the entrance door.

Consequently, perhaps many men would also be 'put-off' walking into a metaphysical shop that is painted purples with silver stars on the curtains and other 'affectations' they would associate with femininity, and of course if the store is all about Goddess-centered religious paraphenalia - that would also make them concerned or just plain uncomfortable.

These are the people you need to reach out to and let them know you are available for completely private readings at a place of their choosing.

LOL, TB!

I'm so glad that all of us are not like that! What a stupid sex we are, eh? What think you? A metaphysical shop all in black and chrome and leather....with stone and gargoyles...and...fire and swords. Maybe a beer'n'brats grill in the front. Tarot readings on the pool table, eh? "ManCave Metaphysical"

"ManCave Metaphysical" - I LIKE IT!

"Get your boots shined and your cards read, SIR!"

"ManCave Metaphysical"

In these parts, that would be the drum store... ManCave Metaphysical would be a perfect name for that joint!

But back to the topic... If you don't have a gig at a metaphysical store (manly or otherwise), where would you expect to do the best business? Privacy vs. curiosity seems a dilemma...

The readings at ManCave Metaphysical are done shooting-gallery style. You are escorted to your La-Z-Boy, given a Brat and a Cold Frosty one, and you proceed, in extreme comfort, to blast away with a .357 magnum at the moving tarot cards, which are tallied as your spread. Perhaps all this is done on an 85 inch HiDef system with Dolby surround sound 5.1 liquid nitrogen-cooled speakers. Then your "personal tarot assistant" (you know the one...) comes in and "adds to your understanding".

Talk about client discretion!

Lol!
I slay me! *wipes away a tear*
